'Deila should think about position'published at 14:53

Former Celtic assistant manager Murdo MacLeod doubts Ronny Deila's suggestion that he has no thoughts about his future after their 2-1 defeat by Molde.

The Celtic manager is confident the club's board will give him more time to improve their European fortunes.

But MacLeod says Deila has to fix the problems this season, not next year.

"Obviously every manager has got to think about his position, especially when you're sitting bottom of the group," MacLeod told BBC Scotland.

So how much longer does Ronny Deila have as Celtic manager?

The Norwegian has twice failed to qualify for the Champions League group stages and seems unlikely to guide his side to the Europa League knockout rounds this term.

“I'm very confident we can reach the Champions League next year,” he said. “That confidence comes from what I've done in the past. I know what I'm building. You need to build relationships - it's like having a girlfriend."

When asked if he has had assurances from chief executive Peter Lawwell and owner Dermot Desmond that he will be afforded that opportunity, Deila said: “I feel I have their backing.”

The pressure is building on manager Ronny Deila after another European defeat for Celtic on Thursday. The Scottish champions lost at home against Molde, having been beaten by the same opponents in Norway two weeks ago.

Norwegian Deila attributed the difficulties to defensive problems.

"We gave them two goals, easy goals," he said. "We can fix the individual errors that are causing the problems. Changing the back four doesn't help. People look a bit nervous. There's a lack of leadership and also a confidence issue.

"We didn't go for experienced defender because our policy is to buy young talented players we can develop. But it's about a balance."

"Maybe he's tired of arguing his case," Hughes said. "It might impact negatively on the team but it might not.

"I don't anticipate him sneaking in with a laundry basket again. I'm not sure if it's for us or the FA to monitor him. Unless an FA official is sat on Jose's knee I'm not sure if anyone knows if he'll be here."

Palace manager Alan Pardew: "We're looking forward to the game. We had a good performance against Manchester United [0-0 last week] and did well at Anfield last season.

"Yala's [Yannick Bolasie] played as a striker a number of times for us and I thought he did okay. His pace & power caused LFC problems last time."

    On their opponents:

"Liverpool had a long trip to Russia last night. We need to put them under pressure on Sunday.

"I think Christian Benteke's a terrific player. He's a different kind of threat to what they've had before and a great signing, I think.

"I thought that squad at the start of the year was a top four squad - and my mind hasn't changed."
