Fabian Delph, who moved to City from Villa in the summer, received a fair bit of stick from the home fans during the game.

Supporters made their feelings known by holding up inflatable snakes - a reference to Delph's pledge to stay at Villa, before he changed his mind and signed for the Blues a few days later.

What did new Villa boss Remi Garde make of his first match in charge, we hear you cry?

Well, he described it as a "nice experience", adding: "It was a fantastic atmosphere, a tough game, but I can be very happy with my team, I saw smiles on their faces.

    gImage source, Getty Images

"When you play with sadness it does not help you. I tried in the three training sessions we had to deliver my message. Nobody expected we were going to score two or three goals.

"Some of the players who didn't start today had problems during the week. Nobody will play because he's French or Spanish or British. I saw in training how good or bad they were."

Should be an interesting few months ahead.

Let's finish our round-up of Sunday's Premier League action now and what a fine result it was for bottom clubAston Villa, holding leadersManchester Cityto a goalless draw in Remi Garde's first game as manager.

Displaying a new-found defensive solidity, the hosts restricted City well although Raheem Sterling should have scored with a close-range header.

It was a first point for Villa since August, ending a disastrous run of seven straight league defeats.

Missed opportunity for Manuel Pellegrini's side though, who remain level on points with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

"Kieran Gibbs' movement is good. His timing in the box is good. Sometimes when he gets into a position he doesn't believe he can score," said Arsene Wenger afterwards, who seemed pretty happy with a point after the midweek Champions League mauling in Munich.

"What this Premier League shows is that you have to fight 200% in every game for a result. It will be down to the team that can find the mental resource in every game."

As for opposite number Mauricio Pochettino, he seemed quite satisfied too. "The way we played we should feel very proud," said the Spurs boss, whose team remain unbeaten since the opening day.

"The effort was brilliant. The level we showed and the commitment was fantastic. It's the way we want to carry on."

Over in North London, substitute Kieran Gibbs rescued a point for Arsenal in a pulsating north London derby against Tottenham.

Spurs dominated for long periods and took a deserved first-half lead when Harry Kane broke clear and slotted in.

However, Arsenal slowly took control in the second half and equalised when Mesut Ozil provided a deep cross for Gibbs to bundle past Hugo Lloris.

Arsenal are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, while Spurs lie fifth.

He was reportedly about to be sacked as Real Sociedad manager on Sunday, but his cancelled flight from Manchester means his exit is now expected to be confirmed on Monday.

The Scot's Real Sociedad team are marooned near the bottom of La Liga - above the relegation zone on goal difference - and produced a limp performance in Friday's 2-0 defeat against lowly Las Palmas.

The Black Caps - having been set a world record 504 to win - resumed on 142-3 but their challenge quickly folded.

Brendon McCullum hit a run-a-ball 80 - before being given out to a shocker of a decision - but the Kiwis were all out for 295.

    Wada report (14:00 GMT)

    Dan Roan
    BBC Sports editor

After several days of silence, Coe's fightback on behalf of the sport he was elected to lead just three months ago has begun not a moment too soon.

He has been criticised for previously calling media investigations into allegations of doping a "declaration of war", and for referring to the man he replaced, Lamine Diack as the sport's "spiritual" leader.

He has also refused to end his ambassadorial role with Nike, despite claims this amounts to a conflict of interest. Coe knows he must now be seen to live up to the pledge he made during his presidential election campaign and somehow rebuild trust in athletics after a year of horribly damaging headlines.

But with Wada preparing to reveal the results of its long investigation into athletics on Monday, the former middle-distance champion knows things are about to get even worse before they can get better.

"I'm more determined than ever to rebuild the trust in our sport. However, this is a long road to redemption."
