"Back to back defeats by Liverpool and Juventus have made it a week to forget for Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, but his side have already qualified for the Champions League knockout stage and will return to the top of the Premier League tomorrow if they beat Southampton at home.

"That hasn't stopped speculation that City could be lining up an audacious bid to replace manager Manuel Pellegrini with Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola next summer, and reunite the former Barcelona boss with Lionel Messi, who would be paid £800,000 a week to make the switch.

    Football

Aston Villa defender Micah Richards has done an interview with The Daily Telegraph and let's just say he's not too happy with the attitude of some of his team-mates.

Villa are bottom of the Premier League, having scored just 10 goals - the fewest in the top flight so far - and have shipped 24 goals in 13 matches.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat it, we've got too many nice players and we're too easy to play against," said the centre-back.

"Everybody seems to be - I wouldn't say passing the blame - but they don't want to run that extra mile and take responsibility.

"I'm not big on stats but I think we've run the least in the Premier League - if you're not prepared to run the extra yard for your team mate then obviously you're going to concede chances."

Football - Manchester United news conference

Jamie Vardy made a name for himself with his performance in Leicester's 5-3 win over Manchester United last season and Louis van Gaal says the Foxes forward is a "nasty player".

"He was already last year a very nasty player for us. He scores, he provoked a penalty and now he is scoring in a row 10 goals so now you are a great player," says the Dutchman.

"I only know, for example, Dennis Bergkamp as a player with me did the same with Ajax and that is not so easy."

Asked if he would consider signing Vardy, Van Gaal replies: "That is not your business, I think."

  92. 'In the last three games we have only got one point'

Football - West Ham news conference

    West Ham midfielder Alex Song

West Ham may be sixth but have stuttered of late and manager Slven Bilic is looking to get back on track. He has midfielders Alex Song and Pedro Obiang back at his disposal for the game against West Brom.

"In the last three games we have got only one point and that is not what we want. We have a home game now and our plan is to try to win," says Bilic.

"Alex Song had a long time out, and now we have two players coming back - him and Pedro Obiang.

"Pedro is back in training and looks good. Alex played 10 minutes against Spurs and he looks good in training too.

"His break was much longer than Pedro's so his situation is slightly different. Probably one of them will play because we are without our captain Mark Noble."

Football - Manchester United news conference

You would think being second in the Premier League might mean a break from criticism but not for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman has taken some stick for his side's lack of flair and United didn't help the issue by failing to break down PSV Eindhoven in their 0-0 Champions League group game on Wednesday.

"If we weren't creating chances I'd be worried, but we are and we don't give too much away - normally our results are good," says Van Gaal.

"Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Leicester City could win the Premier League title this season. The Dutchman admits it’s difficult for clubs that start the season well to keep pace with bigger clubs, but says because of the quality and money in the Premier League it is possible.

"The Dutchman also described Jamie Vardy as a “nasty player” for them to face after his starring role in their 5-3 defeat at Leicester last season, but feels his side have improved defensively since then.

"Van Gaal also says the decision to send 19-year-old James Wilson on loan to Championship promotion hopefuls Brighton is a long-term view to helping the player improve, and says they can recall the striker if he is required."

"We have got injuries that we're really concerned and worried about for Sunday. It's about getting them as close as we can and making a decision on Sunday morning," says Pulis.

"We've been very careful with those players. Most of the week we've kept them out of the fray and make sure they're fit for Sunday. Irrespective of what you do during the week, you want your best players on the pitch on Sunday. Or Saturday, whichever it is, or Monday night, or Tuesday, or whenever they've got these games."

  109. 'Sacking Monk would be painful'

    Football

    Swansea manager Garry Monk

Now, Swansea manager Garry Monk's job seems to be in a bit of jeopardy after a run of only one win in their past 10 games and former Wales international John Hartson says getting rid of him would be a "painful decision".

"This is not Monk's first bad run as Swansea manager - after beating Cardiff in his first game in charge in February 2014, he only managed one more victory in the next 12 matches," says Hartson.

"He recovered from that and went from strength to strength. He was linked with every top-flight job going last summer and deservedly signed a new three-year contract.

"I don't know whether Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins will stick with him this time, but I do know that firing Monk would be a particularly painful decision."

But before we talk in depth about tennis, let's look at what the back pages of the national newspapers look like this morning.

The Daily Express focuses on Kyle Edmund who is making his Davis Cup debut today.

"Only six men in history have made their Davis Cup debut in the final itself. Edmund, 20, will be looking to become the first of them to win a live rubber," writes the paper's Matthew Dunn.

    Tennis

One day we could look back on 27 November as the first of a historic long weekend for British tennis. Great Britain's Davis Cup team begin their quest today for a first Davis Cup victory since 1936.

Kyle Edmund will make his competition debut against Belgian number one David Goffin in the opening match (12:30 GMT).

British number one Andy Murray will then take on world number 108, Ruben Bemelmans. It's exciting stuff.
