James Kirk: Monk will always be a club legend but he had clearly lost the dressing room. Not enough funds to buy a squad in new January.

Lee: A bad patch of results isn't grounds for sacking, but an apparent inability to change it is. 1 win in 11? Gotta go.

Dave Payn: Well, as dumb decisions go, Swansea giving Garry Monk the heave-ho is right up there.

Alex Younger: Gary Monk could save Villa's season. Garde not good enough. Got to be ruthless to survive.

AIJ: Monk should have been backed with funds in January after all he's done for the club sacking him this side of January is wrong.

Swansea City statement on Monkpublished at 15:51

    Football

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has released a statement following the departure of manager Garry Monk.

“The decision has been made very reluctantly and with a heavy heart," he said.

“To find ourselves in our current situation from where we were in the first week of September, and considering the drop of performance levels and run of results over the last three months, it has brought us to this unfortunate decision today.

“Garry took on the job 22 months ago with the backing of everyone at the club. And when you take into account the excellent campaign we had last season when we broke all club records in the Premier League, nobody foresaw the position we would be in at this moment in time.

“It was not a decision we took lightly, especially given Garry’s history and standing within the club. And it goes without saying that we wish Garry all the very best for the future and thank him for his tremendous service, not only as a player over the last decade, but also as our manager. He will always have a warm welcome at this football club."

The BBC have been hugely supportive in hearing my own views and I am hugely honoured and privileged to be included on the shortlist for such a prestigious event alongside so many remarkable sporting personalities, majority of whom I will proudly say to my son and I had the chance to meet."

  18. Monk can turn Swans around - Nevinpublished at 14:58

    Football

Swansea boss Garry Monk's future at the club is becoming increasingly uncertain, but some people still believe the 36-year-old can turn things around.

“You wouldn’t be surprised that, if he was left another month or so, it turned around," BBC Football pundit Pat Nevin told BBC Radio Wales.

“A lot of it depends on the confidence in the group, and also what they do in the January transfer window.

"If you don’t make the decision between now and January, you’re going to let your current manager spend quite a bit of money in January - if he’s not the guy you’re going to go with long term, then that’s not actually that good an idea."

Can Arsenal topple Olympiakos?published at 14:52

    Olympiakos v Arsenal (19:45 GMT)

BBC Radio 5 live in Athens

    GreeceImage source, Getty Images

"A walk up to the mighty Acropolis of Athens this morning yielded a chat with a few Arsenal fans.

"General consensus among them was optimism, that the Gunners won't get turned over tonight but that a two-goal or 3-2 win would be "a big ask."

"Minus Sanchez, Cazorla & Coquelin in their ranks, it's hard to disagree.

"Olympiakos have a 100% domestic record this season and only Bayern Munich - in Champions League Group F - have toppled Greek football's number one team.

"But Arsene Wenger reminded us yesterday that his Arsenal teams "have a history of positive results" and suggested that Olympiakos have it all to lose.

"Can't help but think that for the Gunners to pull this off, a Mesut Ozil masterclass will be needed this evening."
