A defeat at Old Trafford in their penultimate Group B game would have ended PSV's involvement in this season's Champions League. That they battled to a well-earned goalless draw that night before capitalising on Manchester United's failure at Wolfsburg to qualify is a testimony to the Dutch side's resilience.

For not the first time in recent years, United swooped in to snatch away their star player in the summer - Memphis Depay for £31m. Phillip Cocu's side dusted themselves off, though, and carried on. That their progress came at the expense of United will be particularly sweet.

One-time Newcastle flop Luuk de Jong has been the star man for PSV this season, scoring a league-high 13 goals to keep them in contention for the Eredivisie title and netting twice in the Champions League.

    Group record: W3 D1 L2 GD1 P10

CL top-scorer: Luuk de Jong (2)

Former Swansea City captain Alan Tate says the club should back or "get rid of" manager Garry Monk.

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins earlier stated "something needs to change" at the Premier League strugglers, who have won only one of their last 11 league matches.

"I wish they'd either come out and back him or get rid of him," said Tate of his former team-mate.

"Either way, I think he'd rather know, rather than hanging on."

    Wolfsburg

    Wolfsburg playersImage source, EPA

Wolfsburg's progress to the knock-out stages came courtesy of a first-place Group B finish and at the expense of Manchester United following a dramatic night in Germany that saw Dieter Hecking's side come from behind to win 3-2. It is the first time the Bundesliga club have reached the knockout stages, having failed to progress from their group in their only previous Champions League campaign in 2009-10.

It has been a somewhat inconsistent domestic campaign for Wolfsburg so far, although they remain just outside the top four of the Bundesliga table. And with the likes Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler in their midfield, they pose a potentially tricky task for any opponent.

    Sturridge injured...againpublished at 09:52

England striker Daniel Sturridge has been jinxed by injury while at Liverpool.

And he's been ruled out again for several weeks after suffering a hamstring problem during Sunday's defeat by Newcastle.

Thigh, calf and hip injuries restricted Sturridge to 18 appearances last season and he has played only six games this term - although he has bagged four goals along the way.

Since coming into all their millions, Paris St-Germain are still waiting for their first truly breakthrough year in the Champions League. Quarter-finalists for the last three seasons, the French champions will be hoping to at least go one stage further this campaign.

They are currently 15 points clear in Ligue 1 after just 17 games and enjoyed a good group stage, winning four of their games and conceding only one goal. Unfortunately, they were in a group with Real Madrid and that one goal conceded was the one that inflicted their only defeat, at the Bernabeu. As a result, they had to settle for second place.

However, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack, anything is possible. And we do mean anything.

Are Manchester United better than last season, as manager Louis van Gaal suggests?

Adam Taylor: Improved from last vs Wolfsburg & Everton, great attacking + youth. Need more mobility in CM, affecting both attack and defence.

Jon Gates: Look at the league. Not one club is out and out winning every game. Sir Alex over achieved on so many occasions but it wasn't luck. He was the best manager for 30 years. United fans have had it too easy for years. Is there really any surprise Sir Alex leaving has lead to this? No one should be surprised.

    Real Madrid

    Cristiano RonaldoImage source, Getty Images

Throughout the morning we will be looking at those teams that have already qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Real Madrid gave a timely reminder of their attacking potency in their final Group A game as Cristiano Ronaldo scored four and Karim Benzema three in an 8-0 thrashing of poor Malmo. The win ensured the 10-time European Champions go through as group winners - no mean feat considering Paris St-Germain were one of their rivals.

Real (and their manager Rafa Benitez) have come in for some stick of late, particularly after the recent El Clasico loss to Barcelona, but nobody will want to draw them in the first knockout round, especially if Tuesday's display is a sign of a return to sparkling form for Ronaldo. And if Cristiano doesn't do the job, chances are Benzema or Gareth Bale will.
