Carniero's claim includes a request for reinstatement, raising the possibility of a return to Stamford Bridge for her. However the club will not be forced to take her back.

    Ascot

Security measures at Ascot racecourse have been significantly stepped with Saturday’s expected 16,000-strong crowd facing body searches as well as bag checks.

Nick Smith, spokesman for the Royal racecourse, says the changes are “sensible measures” in the light of world events and not a reaction to a specific threat.

“We have actively upped the security and made it more visible.

“Metal detector wands are being employed for the first time plus more search dogs and we’ve doubled the staff doing it which should ensure as little hold-up for customers as possible.”

  36. What next for Mourinho?

    England

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Mourinho was right in the frame to succeed Steve McClaren in 2007 but eventually pulled out of contention.

Would the Football Association be tempted to make an approach if Euro 2016 does not go to plan and Roy Hodgson's time is up?

It is an unlikely scenario but if England were seeking a new manager and Mourinho was available, surely the call has to be made? Unlikely - but an interesting thought.

  39. Liverpool news conference

Watford v Liverpool (Sun, 13:30 GMT)

All the Premier League managers have had their say about Jose Mourinho's departure from Chelsea, so what does Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp think?

"It is sad situation that such a successful relationship between Jose Mourinho and Chelsea ends like this," said the German. "So I wish Jose all the best and he can use the time a little bit for himself because as I know after a few days, weeks, it's good to have a little bit of rest.

"I think he has worked over the last few years constantly and that's not easy at this level - I wish him all the best.

  40. What next for Mourinho?

    Bayern Munich

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Bayern Munich may soon find themselves having to fill a Pep Guardiola-sized hole at the Allianz Arena, and few managers in football have the pedigree and personality to match the demands and expectations of a club known as 'FC Hollywood'.

Mourinho is one, and his sudden availability may spark interest from Bayern, though this job looks like it has got Carlo Ancelotti's name on it.

    Rating: 5/10

  42. Wigan post losses

    Football

League One side Wigan Athletic have announced a loss of £3.9m for 2015, their first for four years.

The Latics made a profit of £2.6m in 2014, but were relegated from the Championship last season.

    DW Stadium

Turnover decreased from £37m to £28 because of a reduction in Premier League parachute payments, no Europa League football and a smaller income from the FA Cup.

The results mean that Wigan's net debt has increased to £13.3m.

  43. What next for Mourinho?

    Real Madrid

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

His cause was not helped by the 4-0 El Clasico thrashing by Barcelona and the loss to Villarreal that has put Real off the pace in La Liga and the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss under pressure.

Could Mourinho return to Real? He left amid squad acrimony in 2013 but president Florentino Perez remains an admirer and it may be a case of Mourinho feeling he has unfinished business if he ever had the chance to go back.

Managerial positions are always fluid at the Bernabeu - so it is a case of "never say never".

United manager Louis van Gaal is struggling to win over a sceptical public unhappy with his playing style and his team's recent exit from the Champions League.

If Van Gaal fails to improve matters and Mourinho is available at the end of the season, could he be the perfect replacement?

  48. Mourinho's departure - global reaction

Jose Mourinho's sacking has made headlines all over the world this morning, BBC Monitoring reports.

In Spain, both Marca and AS use the headline "Mourinho Anda Suelto", meaning "Mourinho walks free" - an apparent reference to a song entitled "El Diablo (The Devil) Anda Suelto". Both papers speculate about a return to Real Madrid.

    International papers

In Italy, Il Messaggero says "Disaster at Chelsea as Mourinho the Special One leaves with 12 million (euros)", while Russia's Kommersant says he left "with an allowance".

Ukraine's Segodnya newspaper also focusses on the dent Mourinho's departure will make on the wallet of Chelsea's Russian owner, saying: "Abramovich says bye to Mourinho and 40m euros".

On the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, which is similar to Twitter, a hashtag that roughly translates as "Mourinho leaves class" has been used more than 2000 times so far with users praising the achievements of the self-proclaimed "Special One".

    Geoff Doyle

    BBC Three Counties Radio sport

Watford head coach Quique Flores is looking forward to the Premier League visit of Liverpool on Sunday. And he’s thinking more about the Liverpool team rather than their coach Jurgen Klopp.

“He’s very ambitious, he’s very energetic. But I focus on Liverpool as a team. I’m not thinking too much about the coach – I’m thinking about the players," said the Spaniard.

"I’m happy because these kind of matches against historic teams are always a little bit different. We have to think about the difficulties to play against these type of players because they have energy, they make good pressure, they play well, they play fast, they have a lot of variants.”

Manager Quique Flores is challenging his players to continue their excellent form which sees them 7th in the Premier League: “We haven’t changed anything. We have the same targets.

"I’m happy with their performances and the ambition is to aim high. We have to be ambitious and it’s important that we keep the confidence.

"But before a match I don’t say to the players we can get into Europe. I don’t talk like that.”

  76. Hiddink's best days behind him?

    Phil McNulty

    BBC Sport chief football writer

Guus Hiddink resigned as Turkey coach after failing to get them to Euro 2012 then had a short spell in charge of Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala before sustaining arguably the biggest scar on his reputation when he succeeded Louis van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup for a second stint as Netherlands coach.

He lasted only 10 months and left the job with the Dutch qualification campaign for Euro 2016 doomed, losing five of his ten games in charge.

The facts suggest Hiddink's best days are behind him - but Abramovich will hope the return to Chelsea will buck that disturbing trend since he was last in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Guus Hiddink celebrates winning the FA Cup with Chelsea

Guus Hiddink is in a London hotel putting the finishing touches to his return to Chelsea - but is Roman Abramovich actually turning to a manager who is out of his time?

Hiddink will be trading on memories of his successful temporary spell in charge in 2009, when he took over from sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari and won the FA Cup against Everton at Wembley.

The 69-year-old's reputation has been dented since then with an undistinguished spell in charge of Russia, where he was sacked for failing to get them to the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

It is understood that Hiddink is looking forward to the challenge at Chelsea, but is acutely aware of the size of the task he faces. He acknowledges the club are in a completely different position to that when he previously took interim charge in 2009, but is confident he can help turn it around and that the squad of players are more than capable of doing so.

The good news for Chelsea fans is German newspaper Bild reported on Thursday that Guardiola will leave the Bavarian club at the end of this season.

World Rugby is to trial the use of two on-field referees in New Zealand's 2016 provincial championship.

The decision follows a review of the rules by rugby's governing body.

Each referee's responsibilities have not been specified but it is thought the second official will police a new offside line a metre back from rucks.

Two referees have never been used in rugby union before but Australia's National Rugby League has had two on-field officials since 2009.

Mourinho has a way about him, everywhere he has been, he has been successful. He has had a hold on all the players. What has gone wrong with these players? They won the Premier League last season.

"I don't even see the Eva Carneiro incident as being relevant. The 70 minutes against Leicester was the worst I have ever seen, the players were ignoring his instructions, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Former Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"There is no disputing Jose Mourinho is not a genius, but the bottom line is that he has lost the players. There has been a rift with Eden Hazard and end of the day, it is about results.

"Mourinho knew on Monday night after the Leicester loss that it was the end. This is an intelligent guy, when you talk about betrayal, you know it's the end.

The Telegraph's chief sports writer Paul Hayward: "Even after last season’s title win there was never a convincing sense that Mourinho admired this Chelsea side the way he did the Blues of 2005 or his Champions League winning Inter Milan team.

"A rupture over the summer – and probably over the vindictive treatment of Dr Eva Carneiro– exposed the essential weakness of the relationship between Mourinho and this group. And as we know, deterioration, at Chelsea, never happens at a stately pace."

The Times' Henry Winter: "Whatever their view of Mourinho, Chelsea players have an emotional duty to fans and a financial obligation to employers to end their working day with a shirt soaking in sweat.

"Slate Mourinho all you want, but where is the dressing room hunger?"

So, we've heard from a Chelsea insider and some other big players in this story (yes, I am including Football Federation Australia and Mateja Kezman).

    What about the papers?

Anthony M: I heard Mourinho's off to manage Yeovil, the Blues will eventually end up in the same league as the Glovers anyway

Sylvester Okorie: Mourinho should take up the Portugal National team job while Chelsea should employ Brendan Rogers.

To thicken the plot a little further, former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman claimed Hiddink told him on Thursday that he had been given the Chelsea job.

"I do not know if it is officially confirmed, whether the club has announced it, but Guus told me earlier," Kezman is quoted as saying.

"I think this decision is correct and Guus Hiddink is a great choice."

On its website, FFA wrote: "Guus Hiddink has taken temporary charge at struggling EPL giant Chelsea after the club announced they'd sacked coach Jose Mourinho overnight following the club's disastrous run in the English Premier League."

The statement has since been toned down to say that Hiddink is "expected" to take charge.

What's the link between Australia and Chelsea I hear you ask?

    Guus Hiddink.

The Dutchman was in charge of the Aussie national team between 2005-06, some three years before he stepped in at Stamford Bridge and took the Blues to the FA Cup.

While Emenalo was giving Mourinho a send-off, Chelsea's next manager was named... by a very odd source.

Jordan Parfitt: Chelsea fan devestated that Jose has gone. Would love to see Alan Pardew given a chance at the Bridge!

King Zorba: Strange to see Emenalo put the boot in given his failings in the transfer market. What happened with Stones, Mr Emenalo?

1970Blue: Emenalo is party wrong: Players should also bear their share in the mess even if Mou is responsible for his share.

Asked about the role of the squad in Mourinho's exit, Emenalo told Chelsea TV: "It's very easy to make that inference but it is not one the club accepts.

"Whilst there is huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter remains that Chelsea Football Club is in trouble.

"Anyone who loves the club, who has any kind of affiliation to the club, can understand that this club is in trouble, and something needed to be done."

So to Stamford Bridge, where technical director Michael Emenalo has said that the Chelsea players were not to blame for Mourinho's exit.

Emenalo also said there was a "palpable discord between manager and players".

According to several reports, Mourinho and the Chelsea team had their Christmas lunch before he was summoned at 2pm to be told by chairman Bruce Buck and director Eugene Tenenbaum that his reign was over.

You can talk about all things Mourinho, particularly on where you think Jose and Chelsea will go next. Your suggestions for the Special One's next job don't even have to be that serious. Have you seen him looking for houses in Luton? Or in conversation with Eddie Jones?

And is now a good time to bring Kurt Zouma into my fantasy football team?

The day after the axing before, there's still lots and lots to talk about. Where did it go wrong? Where next for Jose? Where next for Chelsea? Guus Hiddink in the short-term? Then who?
