Raheem Sterling says he does not think about the huge fee Manchester City paid to sign him from Liverpool.

I didn't want to sack Mourinho - Abramovich

Roman Abramovich addressed the Chelsea players at training today to tell them that he didn't want to sack Mourinho, according to the Daily Mail. 

Apparently he addressed the players in Russian, with his comments translated to the team. 

According to the article, Jose Mourinho was also back at the training ground, and also spoke to the players. He "reminded them of what it took to be winners last season, when they landed the Premier League and the Capital One Cup."

McFadden back at Motherwell...again

Former Scotland forward James McFadden has signed for his first club Motherwell for a third time.

McFadden, who has been training at Fir Park for most of the season after his release by St Johnstone, has been given a contract until the end of January.

The 32-year-old told Well's website: "The club has always had a special place in my heart and I've always had a close bond with the supporters.

"I've been training hard, feel fit and I really believe I can help out."

Ex-Costa Rica chief extradited amid Fifa scandal

More Fifa related news...

Eduardo Li - former president of the Costa Rican Football Federation - has been extradited to the US, the Swiss justice ministry says.

He was handed over to the US police in Zurich and then flown to New York.

Mr Li is one of seven officials with Fifa, world football's governing body, who were arrested in Zurich in May, amid a huge corruption investigation.

Separately, Switzerland will extradite former Fifa Vice-President Eugenio Figueredo to his native Uruguay.

Hayatou calls for a reformed Fifa

Football deserves "nothing less" than a rebuilt and fully accountable Fifa, says acting president Issa Hayatou.

World football's governing body has been engulfed by claims of widespread corruption since summer 2015.

As a result of criminal and internal investigations new reform measures were approved by Fifa in December.

"There may be more challenges, and it will take time for the reforms to take effect. Our resolve to rebuild Fifa for the better remains steadfast," he said.

Bowler Steyn fit to face England

South Africa paceman Dale Steyn's chances of being fit for the Test series with England look positive after he passed a thorough fitness test.

The 32-year-old, the number one ranked Test bowler, has been out of action with a groin strain since the first Test against India in early November.

But in Cape Town this week he was able to bowl at high intensity in the nets, run sprints and do fielding drills.

The first of the four-match Test series begins in Durban on 26 December.

Hockaday is back

Kidderminster Harriers have named former Leeds United boss Dave Hockaday as their new head coach.

The 57-year-old takes over from Gary Whild who left the National League club last month.

Hockaday will be in the dugout  for Saturday's game at Macclesfield, with Harriers bottom of the table, without a win, and five points from safety.

"Dave has an enviable reputation as a coach within the game," said Kidderminster chairman Rod Brown.

Para-triathlete rules out Rio complacency

World Para-triathlon champion Lauren Steadman has ruled out any complacency after 14 months unbeaten.

The 23-year-old is also British and European champion going into Rio 2016, when Para-triathlon will make its Paralympics debut.

"I didn't ever believe I'd have such an achievement, but everyone trains as equally as hard so I can't sit back and relax," she told BBC Look East.

"I just get it in my head that the rest of the world is chasing me."

Scots to face Australia

Scotland have the chance to avenge their last-minute Rugby World Cup quarter-final defeat when Australia visit in the autumn Tests in November.

Vern Cotter's men will face the Wallabies for the first time since the 35-34 loss at Twickenham in the first of the traditional three-Test series.

Both that opener on Saturday 12 November and the Test against World Cup semi-finalists Argentina the following Saturday will be at Murrayfield.

Varney signs new Ipswich deal

Luke Varney has signed a deal with Ipswich Town until the end of the season, while fellow forward David McGoldrick faces lengthy spell out.

Varney, 33, has been undergoing rehabilitation with Ipswich since injuring his Achilles in last season's play-off semi-final against Norwich while on loan from Blackburn.

He played 12 games for Ipswich before being released by Rovers in the summer.

Meanwhile, McGoldrick is out for the "long-term" with a hamstring tear.

Goulding returns to Wigan

Wigan Warriors have appointed former centre Darrell Goulding as their youth development coach after his retirement in June.

Goulding, 27, was at Hull KR when he was forced to quit the game on medical advice after suffering a series of concussion injuries.

He came through the academy at the Warriors and won a Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2013.

"This club will always feel like home and I'm glad to be back," he said.

Sri Lanka investigate match fixing

Sri Lankan authorities are investigating an attempt to fix an international cricket match involving the national team and the West Indies.

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said a suspected bookmaker had approached two Sri Lankan players ahead of the match to try to convince them to under-perform and lose the match.

Both players turned down the approach and the authorities were informed, Mr Jayasekara said.

Sri Lanka went on to win the game.

Plough Lane 'a dream' for Dons boss

AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley says it would be "a dream" to lead the club into their new stadium at Plough Lane.

The Dons have planning permission to build a new ground on the site of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, and hope to complete construction in 2018.

Ardley wants his team to display the spirit shown by fans in re-establishing the club. "They don't expect you to play free-flowing football like Real Madrid, though it's a bonus if you do," he said.

Swansea 'won't rush' naming new boss

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins says they "will not rush" appointing a new manager, following Garry Monk's departure earlier this month.

Former Argentina and Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa has recently been the leading candidate to take over.

Jenkins travelled to South America, where it is understood he spoke to the 60-year-old about taking charge.

"We have been working tirelessly and diligently to fill the managerial void," said Jenkins via Twitter.

Liverpool Ladies have signed England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain for the 2016 Women's Super League season.

She left Arsenal at the end of last term, during which she had a spell on loan at Notts County.

The 32-year-old was a member of the England squad that finished third at the World Cup in Canada.

Veteran Batty signs new Surrey deal

Surrey captain Gareth Batty has signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until the end of 2017.

The 38-year-old spinner skippered the side to the Division Two title in 2015.

Carneiro to continue legal case

Chelsea filed their defence before yesterday's midnight deadline ahead of an initial hearing in South London on 6th January. A date for the full tribunal will  be set, and Mourinho and Chelsea hierarchy will be compelled to give evidence in person.

Carniero's claim includes a request for reinstatement, raising the possibility of a return to Stamford Bridge for her. However the club will not be forced to take her back.

Carniero left the club in September when she was demoted after Mourinho criticised her and physio Jon Fearn for going onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard on the opening day of the season.

Security measures at Ascot racecourse have been significantly stepped with Saturday’s expected 16,000-strong crowd facing body searches as well as bag checks.

Nick Smith, spokesman for the Royal racecourse, says the changes are “sensible measures” in the light of world events and not a reaction to a specific threat.

“We have actively upped the security and made it more visible.

“Metal detector wands are being employed for the first time plus more search dogs and we’ve doubled the staff doing it which should ensure as little hold-up for customers as possible.”

German police have confirmed that the family of Steve Gohouri has filed a missing person's report for the former Ivory Coast international.

The 34-year-old attended his German club's Christmas party on Friday before heading to see his family in Paris.

Wigan post losses

League One side Wigan Athletic have announced a loss of £3.9m for 2015, their first for four years.

The Latics made a profit of £2.6m in 2014, but were relegated from the Championship last season.

Turnover decreased from £37m to £28 because of a reduction in Premier League parachute payments, no Europa League football and a smaller income from the FA Cup.

The results mean that Wigan's net debt has increased to £13.3m.

Mourinho's departure - global reaction

Jose Mourinho's sacking has made headlines all over the world this morning, BBC Monitoring reports. 

In Spain, both Marca and AS use the headline "Mourinho Anda Suelto", meaning "Mourinho walks free" - an apparent reference to a song entitled "El Diablo (The Devil) Anda Suelto". Both papers speculate about a return to Real Madrid. 

.

In Italy, Il Messaggero says "Disaster at Chelsea as Mourinho the Special One leaves with 12 million (euros)", while Russia's Kommersant says he left "with an allowance". 

Ukraine's Segodnya newspaper also focusses on the dent Mourinho's departure will make on the wallet of Chelsea's Russian owner, saying: "Abramovich says bye to Mourinho and 40m euros". 

On the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, which is similar to Twitter, a hashtag that roughly translates as "Mourinho leaves class" has been used more than 2000 times so far with users praising the achievements of the self-proclaimed "Special One".

Celtic ban fans over Turkey flares

Celtic have "indefinitely suspended" two fans from attending matches home and away after the use of flares inside Fenerbahce's stadium in Istanbul.

The Glasgow club face what would be a fourth sanction this year from European football's governing body, Uefa.

"There have been calls from many for Celtic to raise a civil action in relation to recovering any fines imposed," said a club statement.

LeBron James accidentally injured Ellie Day, wife of world number two golfer Jason, as the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar collided with the courtside seats in his team's win over Oklahoma.

James, 30, was chasing a loose ball and unable to stop himself crashing into Ellie, who was sat next to her husband.

Ellie was taken to hospital in a neck brace, but was released on Friday.

Griffiths signs new Celtic deal

Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths has signed a new contract, which will run until the end of the 2020/21 season, with champions Celtic.

Vardy brings Christmas cheer to hospital

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy may have hastened Jose Mourinho's Chelsea exit, but he has at least shown he is not full of humbug spirit by bringing Christmas cheer to children at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

He showed his festive side when he and his table-topping team-mates clubbed together to buy presents and then personally deliver them on Thursday.

"Some of these kids might not be able to get home home for Christmas," Vardy told BBC East Midlands Today.

Dhanda agrees pro Liverpool contract

Liverpool youngster Yan Dhanda has become the first player of Indian heritage to sign a professional contract with the Anfield club.

Birmingham-born playmaker Dhanda, 17, joined the Reds' academy in July 2013 from West Brom and has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Real Madrid have no immediate plan to bring back Jose Mourinho, according to president Florentino Perez.

Mourinho, 52, won La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his time at the Bernabeu from 2010 to 2013, but on Thursday was sacked as manager of Chelsea.

Real manager Rafael Benitez is under pressure in a disappointing season that includes a 4-0 home loss to Barcelona.

Perez said: "No-one can know the future, but right now he will not come to Madrid."

'You humiliated her'

Guus Hiddink has confirmed he is in talks with Chelsea, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

As we reported first earlier today, the Dutchman is in London for discussions over an interim role at Stamford Bridge.

Hiddink will be trading on memories of his successful temporary spell in charge in 2009, when he took over from sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari and won the FA Cup against Everton at Wembley.

The good news for Chelsea fans is German newspaper Bild reported on Thursday that Guardiola will leave the Bavarian club at the end of this season.

The bad news is he seems more likely to be heading to the north west than SW6, with Manchester United's long-standing interest and Manchester City's Catalan connection in the boardroom apparently more attractive than succeeding his great La Liga rival.

"A couple of bad apples" caused Mourinho problems

The BBC's Garry Richardson claims Jose Mourinho said he had a “couple of bad apples” in his Chelsea team that were causing him “lots of problems”.

Speaking on 5 live Sport on Thursday evening, Richardson said one of his sources had told him the Portuguese spoke of his frustration at being unable to handle the disruptive influences.

Premier League managers have been holding their usual weekend media conferences and have been having their say on the former Blues boss.

Bolton 'should avoid administration'

Financially troubled Bolton Wanderers should avoid administration, says manager Neil Lennon.

The Championship's bottom side are speaking to a number of parties about a takeover from owner Eddie Davies.

Last week they were issued with a winding-up petition by HMRC and their players were not paid in November.

However, Lennon told BBC Radio Manchester: "There are due to be paid on the 29th and from what I gather they will get a percentage of the money and the rest will be made up by the PFA."

World Rugby to trial two refs

World Rugby is to trial the use of two on-field referees in New Zealand's 2016 provincial championship.

The decision follows a review of the rules by rugby's governing body.

Each referee's responsibilities have not been specified but it is thought the second official will police a new offside line a metre back from rucks.

Two referees have never been used in rugby union before but Australia's National Rugby League has had two on-field officials since 2009.

Slade targets summer tour

England centre Henry Slade has set his sights on a place on the tour to Australia next summer as he recovers from a broken leg. 

The 22-year-old suffered the injury in the win over Wasps earlier this month and is likely to be out until March, ruling him out of the Six Nations. 

"At the minute I'd just like to get back fit and be playing for Exeter. Then if I get selected in the summer to go to Australia that would be awesome," Slade told BBC South West.

Saints in danger of drop zone

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman says his side are in danger of being sucked into a Premier League relegation battle.

Saints have taken just one point from their last four games to slip to 12th in the table.

However, the Dutchman, 52, believes they have what it takes to turn their recent poor form around.

Man United 'aware' of Wilson progress

Manchester United know how well striker James Wilson is performing during his loan spell at Brighton, according to Albion boss Chris Hughton.

Wilson, 22, has scored two goals in four appearances since joining the Championship side in November.

Blues sign prop Ma'afu

Cardiff Blues have signed former Australia prop Salesi Ma'afu following his release by French club Toulon.

Ma'afu, 32, left the European champions by mutual agreement after being found guilty of assault and given a suspended four-month prison sentence last month.

Proud breaks 14-year record

Ben Proud has broken Mark Foster's 14-year-old short-course 50m freestyle British record.

The 21-year-old, who won two Commonwealth gold medals in 2014, swam 20.74 to beat the mark set by Foster in January 2001 by 0.39 seconds.

McIlroy wants number one spot

Rory McIlroy will have a busier early-season schedule in 2016 than previous years as he aims to reclaim the world number one spot before the Masters.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, 26, has dropped to three in the rankings behind Jordan Spieth and Jason Day but the margin between the top three is small.

Lukaku aiming for Champions League

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku says a Champions League place is a "very realistic" aim this season.

The Toffees are 10th in the Premier League and six points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United, who hold the final Champions League qualifying spot.

Everton host surprise leaders Leicester on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

"We want to do well in the League Cup and FA Cup but the Champions League spot is the main goal," Lukaku, 22, told BBC Football Focus.

'Charles could have given more to the team'

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has questioned Charles N'Zogbia's commitment and indicated he may offload high-earning players in January.

Garde, whose side are bottom of the Premier League, has not picked the midfielder in his last three squads.

Frenchman N'Zogbia, 29, joined Villa from Wigan for about £9.5m and is out of contract in June.

"Charles could have given more to the team in the first two or three weeks after I came," said Garde.

"We are not in a position about who Mourinho has been picking, more about his judgement of that."

To thicken the plot a little further, former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman claimed Hiddink told him on Thursday that he had been given the Chelsea job.

"I do not know if it is officially confirmed, whether the club has announced it, but Guus told me earlier," Kezman is quoted as saying.

"I think this decision is correct and Guus Hiddink is a great choice."

On its website, FFA wrote: "Guus Hiddink has taken temporary charge at struggling EPL giant Chelsea after the club announced they'd sacked coach Jose Mourinho overnight following the club's disastrous run in the English Premier League."

The statement has since been toned down to say that Hiddink is "expected" to take charge.

Emenalo also said there was a "palpable discord between manager and players".

According to several reports, Mourinho and the Chelsea team had their Christmas lunch before he was summoned at 2pm to be told by chairman Bruce Buck and director Eugene Tenenbaum that his reign was over.
