Mark Cavendish slipped 26 seconds behind leader and Dimension Data team-mate Edvald Boasson Hagen after the third stage of the Tour of Qatar.
The 30-year-old Briton, who won the race in 2013, led by five seconds after stage two but was only seventh quickest in Wednesday's time trial.
Norway's Boasson Hagen finished in 13 minutes 26.98 seconds to win the stage by 25 seconds and take the lead.
Super League
Huddersfield Giants full-back Scott Grix will be out for up to five months with a shoulder injury, head coach Paul Anderson has confirmed.
Grix also missed part of the 2014 season and Anderson said: "He has had previous history with surgery on that shoulder and it will be a longer rehabilitation programme."
Skipper Danny Brough (dead leg) and Eorl Crabtree (groin) will also be out for a number of weeks.

Peterborough duo Michael Smith and Ricardo Santos are banned, while Jack Baldwin is doubtful with a back injury. Gabriel Zakuani is available after a long-term hamstring problem but lacks fitness, while Tom Nichols and Adil Nabi are both ineligible.
West Brom will assess Gareth McAuley, Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson, who all suffered injuries against Newcastle, while Jonny Evans is a major doubt.
Chris Brunt, Callum McManaman and James Morrison remain out. Recent signings Alex Pritchard and Sandro are ineligible.
