Senegal international defender Lamine Sane, who was a target for Aston Villa in the transfer window, has been suspended indefinitely by his club Bordeaux, along with goalkeeper Jerome Prior.
Bordeaux said they took the action because of a "serious incident" after their 4-3 extra-time loss to Nantes in their French Cup tie on Wednesday.
They French club added they "would make no further comment on the matter".
Sane joined Bordeaux in 2009 but sought a transfer in January and the ban could now end his career with the club.

Defender Anita Asante has criticised England boss Mark Sampson for failing to explain why she has been dropped.
Asante, 30, who plays for Swedish side Rosengard, has 70 caps and featured at two World Cups and three European Championships.
Despite a call-up a year ago, her last appearance for England came in 2014.
"I don't know why? That's for him to answer. We haven't really had much contact since last year, so that's difficult," Asante, who represented Great Britain at the London 2012 Games, told BBC Sport.

Nottingham Panthers defenceman Sam Oakford has gone from being a photocopying tea boy to making his Great Britain debut on Thursday.
Oakford, 25, was chosen for the Olympic pre-qualifier against the Netherlands.
"Two, three years ago I was sat in an office doing photocopying and making teas for people," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Hoffenheim have made Julian Nagelsmann the youngest manager in Bundesliga history after appointing the 28-year-old as their new manager.
The under-19s coach succeeds Huub Stevens, 62, who resigned on Wednesday because of ill health.
Nagelsmann was due to take charge next season but will now manage the league strugglers with immediate effect following "intensive talks".
He has signed a three-year deal with the club through to June 2019.
Hoffenheim are currently five points off the relegation play-off place and seven points from safety.
Swansea v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)
Swansea, four points above the relegation zone, are unbeaten in Francesco Guidolin's first three games in charge at the club.
"I hope to have the possibility to stay with the players and the club to improve and save the situation," said the Italian. "After that, I want to remain with the club but at the moment I am concentrating on the last part of the season.
"We need to win four or five matches from now until the end of the season but that is not easy to do. I am only thinking about Southampton now, this is the priority."
Cricket
All-rounder Natalie Sciver has been included in England women's squad for the three-match Twenty20 international series against South Africa this month.
The Surrey player, 23, was ruled out of the current one-day series because of an ankle injury.
Sciver will join the squad on 14 February, four days before the first Twenty20 match in Paarl.
The final two Twenty20 internationals, in Cape Town and Johannesburg, will be double-headers with the men.

Vincent Tan insists he is ready to half Cardiff City's approximate £108m debt and the Bluebirds owner maintains the club will be debt-free by 2021.
Tan plans to convert £68m he is owed by the Championship club into equity while writing off another £10m.
Cardiff's debt was £174m at the end of the 2013/14 financial year after their season in the Premier League - most of it owed to major shareholder Tan.
"That would leave £40m owing to me," Tan told BBC Sport.

Essex have signed Pakistan international fast bowler Wahab Riaz for seven T20 Blast matches in 2016.
The 30-year-old, who featured in the recent Test series against England, has played 69 one-day internationals and 15 T20 internationals.

Castleford Tigers forward Oliver Holmes has signed a new contract with the club until the end of 2018.
Holmes, 23, has made 123 Super League appearances for Castleford in six seasons, scoring 18 tries.

Paris St-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has signed a contract extension, committing him to the club until 2018.
The ex-France defender took over from Carlo Ancelotti in June 2013, leading them to two league titles, including last season's domestic treble.
PSG are 24 points clear at the top of Ligue 1, unbeaten domestically this season and face Chelsea in the Champions League last 16.

Neil Warnock is one of three candidates under consideration to become Rotherham manager, BBC Radio Sheffield reports.
All three have Championship experience and are due to be interviewed about the job this week.
Warnock, 67, once played for the Millers, and is available after leaving his role as Queens Park Rangers' temporary manager in December.
Neil Redfearn became the shortest-serving manager in Rotherham's history when he was sacked on Monday.
