    Australia's top goalscorer Tim Cahill has had his contract terminated by Chinese club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua a year after he joined.

    The 36-year-old former Everton star agreed to extend his stay just months ago, but said on Instagram: "I'm very sorry to announce that I have reached an agreement with Shanghai Shenhua to terminate my contract. I'm not part of the new coach Manzano's plans for the 2016 season."

    Cahill, one of the biggest foreign names in the Chinese Super League, said he was "very sad", adding: "Regardless of whether my contract is being honoured and paid out in full, I would much rather have seen it out."

    Paris Saint Germain - through its principle shareholder Qatar Sports Investment - is in talks to buy an stake in David Beckham's Miami Major League Soccer franchise. 

    QSI - an arm of the Qatari state - are understood to be currently negotiating with Beckham and his partners. 

    However sources close to the proposed deal say it is not a formality and PSG are just one of many interested groups.

    The former England captain will remain heavily involved in the project in the event of any sale.

    Retired Ukraine great Andriy Shevchenko - the 2004 Ballon d'Or winner - today started work assistant coach of the country's national squad.

    Manager Mikhail Fomenko introduced the 39-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea striker at a special ceremony held by the Ukraine Football Federation.

    "For me it's a great honour and a huge responsibility," Shevchenko said. "Today I start my comeback to football after four years of leave."

    Shevchenko is Ukraine's all-time top scorer with 48 goals in 111 matches.

    The news was announced on Spurs' website, external in an article which went on to say: "Please note that Jimmy Greaves will not be attending this event in person."

    Greaves, 75, who scored a club-record 220 league goals for Tottenham, suffered a stroke last May.

    Tottenham added: "Since Jimmy suffered a stroke last May, the Club and the Tottenham Tribute Trust have been working closely with Jimmy and his family to ensure his needs have been met during his period of recuperation."

    Leigh have announced French international centre Mathias Pala has been released with immediate effect.

    The 26-year-old, who had made just five appearances for the club since joining from Catalans Dragons for a nominal fee last June, is now a free agent after reaching a compromise agreement with the Centurions.

    Remember those rather alarming comments made by Manny Pacquiao, where he labelledhomosexuals "worse than animals" in a television interview (see 10:30)?

    Well, the Philippine boxer-turned-politician has now posted an apology, of sorts, on his Facebook page., external

    "I'm sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I've hurt," he says.

    "I still stand on my belief that I'm against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I'm not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I'm praying for you."

    Is that enough? Time will tell.

    Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says striker Daniel Sturridge gives the Reds a "fear factor".

    Sturridge, 26, scored on his first Premier League start since October in Sunday's 6-0 win over Aston Villa.

    It was only his sixth league appearance of a season interrupted by knee, foot and hamstring injuries.

    "Any centre-half in the world would be worried coming up against him," said Henderson. "They know how quick he is, how sharp he is with the ball."

    Philippine boxer-turned-politician Manny Pacquiao has sparked controversy for calling homosexuals "worse than animals" in a television interview.

    His comments drew ire from gay Filipino celebrities and a rights group, as well as heated discussion online.

    Mr Pacquiao, who positions himself as a conservative Christian politician, is currently running for a senate seat in the country's May elections.

    The largely Catholic Philippines remains conservative on gay rights.
