Fifa's ethics watchdog has imposed a warning and £4,950 fine on German soccer great Franz Beckenbauer for stonewalling an investigation.

The former World Cup-winning player and coach is arguably Germany's most iconic footballer and a household name who also ran the 2006 World Cup in his home country,

"In the present case, Mr Beckenbauer failed to cooperate with an Ethics Committee investigation...regarding the 2018/2022 Fifa World Cup bids despite repeated requests for his assistance," Fifa's ethics panel said in a statement.

Fifa is investigating the awarding of those tournaments.

Jockey Ruby Walsh has described the news that jump racing's champion hurdler Faugheen is injured and will miss the defence of his title at next month's Cheltenham Festival as "whipping the ace out of the pack".

The star of Irish trainer Willie Mullins' powerful string has suffered a leg injury and will be out until next year - Faugheen's absence means another Mullins runner, Annie Power, a winner at Punchestown today ridden by Walsh, may now be aimed at the champion hurdle.
