Wilkin keen for Super League sides to impresspublished at 16:51

    Rugby League

St Helens captain Jon Wilkin says Super League teams must show they can compete with their National Rugby League counterparts in this weekend's World Club Series.

Three sides from each competition will face each other in consecutive days, starting with Saints against Sydney Roosters on Friday before Saturday's clash between Wigan and Brisbane Broncos.

Sunday's showpiece fixture is Grand Final winners Leeds and NRL champions North Queensland Cowboys in the World Club Challenge, a game Saints lost 39-0 to South Sydney Rabbitohs last year.

"We need to show our competition still has got merits and show young guys they should want to stay and play in our competition," said Wilkin.

Watford got a really good win at Crystal Palace last time out and their form has really picked up again since they lost four in a row at the turn of the year.

Leeds are doing OK in the Championship, but again are nowhere near promotion.

There will be a lot of Leeds fans at Vicarage Road and there should be a great atmosphere, but I am backing the Hornets to go through.

Smith now facing fight for lifepublished at 16:39

    Cycling

Paralympian David Smith tells BBC Sport that he has been forced to give up on his dream to compete at the Rio Games because he needs further surgery on a spinal tumour.

The 37-year-old Briton won gold at London 2012 but his hopes of being part of the Para-cycling squad are over and he says he may now be fighting for his life instead.

    O'Sullivan thrashes Selbypublished at 16:34

    Snooker

Ronnie O'Sullivan thrashed world number one Mark Selby 5-1 in his Welsh Open quarter-final, and insisted he had been trying for a 147 when an opportunity arose.

O'Sullivan turned down the chance to make a 147 break in the first round because the £10,000 prize money was "too cheap", making 146 after choosing the pink over a black.

He then watched on Friday as China’s Ding Junhui made a maximum in his defeat by Neil Robertson.

"I thought 'he's let the lads down, hasn't he?' O'Sullivan joked when asked about Ding's maximum. "Ding got it, fantastic, at least they've had a 147 this week - and a 146. But I was going for it. There's obviously pressure and I twitched on the black."

Pendleton 'annoyed' after Fakenham tumblepublished at 16:28

    Horse Racing

Double Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton was uninjured after being unseated from Pacha Du Polder at Fakenham in her first ride under Rules.

She has told the Racing Post: "I'm okay, just annoyed. I didn't have a chance to stay on. The horse in front jumped a bit squiffy and I went out the side door."

Reading v West Brom (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Reading are not going to get promoted out of the Championship and, despite only one win in their last nine league games, they do not look like they will get relegated either.

West Brom ended their own poor run with a battling win against Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.

I am sure Baggies boss Tony Pulis will juggle his squad to some extent but I don't think a cup run will damage their survival prospects, because I don't think they are going down anyway.

    Horse Racing

Double Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton was unseated from her mount Pacha Du Polder in her latest ride at Fakenham on Friday.

Pendleton was odds-on to win her first race as an amateur jockey but came to grief early on in the Foxhunters Chase when her mount appeared to be knocked by the falling Baltic Blue.

She is aiming to ride the horse, trained by Paul Nicholls, in the Foxhunters Chase on Gold Cup day at Cheltenham.

Arsenal v Hull City (Sat, 12:45 GMT)

This is the third year in a row that Arsenal have played Hull in the FA Cup, and a repeat of the 2014 final, and I think it will also be the third year in a row that the Gunners end up on top.

It is an attractive tie for Hull, but they are top of the Championship and promotion is their priority - they can see the pot of gold. So I am not sure what kind of team Tigers boss Steve Bruce will pick, because he will not want a replay.

I don't see the manner of that win as being a turning point in the season because I was backing Arsene Wenger's side to win the title anyway, but it will definitely boost their belief that they can do it.

Aberdeen face Partick Thistle on Friday knowing that victory would move them level with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, albeit having played two games move.

Winger Jonny Hayes will be absent for up to four weeks out with a hamstring tear but midfielder Ryan Jack is available again after recovering from a similar injury.

Thistle are without full-back Mustapha Dumbuya because of an ankle injury but recent signings Antonio German and Aidan Nesbitt could make their debuts.
