  6. Spanish doping judgementpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 14 June 2016

Let's briefly return to the news that blood bags used as evidence in a major Spanish doping scandal must be handed over to authorities for investigation, at the request of a Madrid court.

The announcement comes 10 years after Operation Puerto revealed a doping network involving some of the world's top cyclists.

Police seized coded blood bags from the clinic of Dr Eufemiano Fuentes.

More than 50 cyclists were originally linked to the case. Among those eventually suspended were former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, Spanish Vuelta champion Alejandro Valverde and Ivan Basso, who later confirmed that his blood was among the frozen samples found.

Fuentes said he also worked with athletes from other sports, and the new ruling raises the potential for the identities of additional athletes to be revealed.

    Football

The Russian government has condemned the "riots" which took place around their country's Euro 2016 game against England in Marseille on Saturday.

"This is absolutely unacceptable. We count on Russian citizens and fans to obey the laws of the country they are in," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that "we can only call on our fans not to react to any sort of provocation."

The statement comes just hours after French authorities confirmed they are deporting a number of Russia supporters.

"To throw a personal best on the main stage is something every athlete wants to do. For me, I was even more shocked because I haven’t been doing too much discus this year as I have been focusing on the shot put for Rio."

The discus is not part of the Rio Paralympic programme, but the shot, where Davies also won gold on Sunday, is.

English players rely on their coaches too much - Jens Lehmannpublished at 10:54

    Football

Former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann says he was left “surprised” by the reliance of English players on coaches to guide them through difficult situations.

Lehmann, who spent six years at Arsenal in two spells, says German players have a more independent mentality.

“When an English player doesn’t really know what to do or needs help he seeks help from his coach. As a German player you could never do that because you cannot expect help from your coach, you have to sort it out yourself.”

“That was a surprise experience for me when some English players explained that they expect their manager to help them. In Germany you don’t do that, you sort it yourself or you are out.”

Koeman confirmed Everton's new managerpublished at 10:32

    Football

    Ian Kennedy
    Reporter, BBC Radio Merseyside Sport

"So Everton have got their man.

An excellent appointment – a great player and now a highly successful manager, who seems to have been the number one choice among Evertonians from Day One.

He’ll know the expectation levels at Everton have remained high despite a long wait for silverware, but that’ll be his challenge, his motivation.

Can he get Everton back to where the wants want them to be? Absolutely. And with more money to spend with Farhad Moshiri at the club, the sky’s the limit.

Koeman may first have to convince one or two of the club’s big hitters to stay, and it’ll be interesting to see if his appointment changes that dynamic.

There’ll be new signings for sure, and it feels like a new era could be about to start at Goodison Park."
