Hodgson says England's 2-1 loss to Iceland and exit from Euro 2016 has caused long-term "damage" to the team.

While Roy Hodgson and Martin Glenn were speaking, Andy Murray finished off fellow Brit Liam Broady to reach the second round of Wimbledon.

Murray, seeded second, saw off the 22-year-old world number 235 from Stockport 6-2 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court.

It was the first all-British meeting at the All England Club since Tim Henman beat Martin Lee in 2001.

Murray, 29, goes on to face Yen-Hsun Lu.

Outgoing England boss Roy Hodgson says the defeat by Iceland will have caused  "damage" to the players.

"I do understand that there will be fierce criticism of England for leaving the tournament at this early stage.

"One particularly bad game has caused a lot of damage to me personally, to the team and to the team going forward, because they've got a bridge to repair."

And with that Hodgson says thank you and goodbye.

"I repeat I have no complaints about the press or the way I was treated.

"I leave you to your stories and I thank you for the time I had with you."

Roy Hodgson is now summing up his thoughts on how the tournament played out:

"We weren't ruthless enough.

"I thought box-to-box there were some good signs that Martin can take forward with this England team

"We did not play well last night and I take full responsibility for that

"There has been lots of questions through the tournament and I have answered them and it's up to you if you like those answers or not."

On who takes over from Hodgson, Martin Glenn says: “We will be looking for the best person for the job.

“We are absolutely not ruling one out. 

“I am not here to talk about names today but I have been consistent with this, saying we will have the best people in the world to take this exciting group of players with high potential forward.

"We are looking for the best person, not necessarily the best Englishman."

FA chief exec Martin Glenn:

"We're all part of the problem and part of the solution.

"I don't think anywhere in the world the scrutiny is so intense on the national team

"We have to take the resilience that is needed and see it as an important part of squad preparation.

Back to FA chief exec Martin Glenn:

"Roy has built a great team spirit amongst this group of players.

"When I went into the dressing room last night the scene was of devastation and personal grief.

"Let's scotch that one: it's not about a lack of passion amongst our players."

"It is a difficult job. It is not an impossible job.

"It is getting easier because there are more good young players coming through

"We showed signs of good football in the first three games which gave us confidence but last night we didn't reproduce.

"Players are more resiliant than coaches because they always have another training session to look forward to or another match

"They didn't play badly last night because they didn't care. They didn't play well last night because sometimes that happens."

Martin Glenn is asked by BBC sports editor Dan Roan why he forced Roy Hodgson to attend this news conference. 

Hodgson then interjects to say: "I wasn't forced to come. I was anxious to make certain that no-one in this room can say I was worried to face the media.

"I did so because I have never shirked a press conference. 

"I maintained I am unhappy about it because it's no longer my job. Nothing I can say can do anything but fuel the flames. 

"I don't want to come here as Uriah Heep and I don't want to come here in a bolshie way either."

FA chief executive Martin Glenn has said that the country is progressing despite the early exit from Euro 2016.

"The big re-investment is still quite new," he said.

"St George's Park is like a Premier League team opening an academy. It takes time.

"We are punching our weight in age-category tournaments and there are reasons to be cheerful because there is progress.

"We qualified extremely strongly and I think, in my view, the team has played better and more consistent football."

"I am still a little bit unsure what I'm doing here," repeats a clearly present-under-duress Hodgson,

"I'm sure those players will live up to expectations and one day I'm sure we'll see England do well in a tournament, I'm hoping in 2018." 

“I think they have shown that they are worthy of wearing an England shirt and they have shown myself and my coaches that in this tournament.

“I don’t think it’s got anything to do with money or where they play.

“It’s 11 men against 11 men and sometimes the 11 men that you hope will be the better team aren’t the better team.

“I am that these players will live up to expectations and they will get better and better.

Roy Hodgson is asked whether he owes the fans an apology.

"As a manger, I am responsible so it's not about transferring blame to the players," he says.

"We feel very sad we couldn't deliver what we wanted to deliver.

"Of course we are sorry we couldn't give the results we were hoping for. There is not much more I can say on the subject."

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn has said it is important that they take their time to analyse what went wrong for England at Euro 2016.

"I think the core question to try and answer is about the lack of performance at the business end of tournaments over a period of time," he said.

"People are looking for quick answers because we are feeling raw.

"I think we need to have a wide consultation. There is not one single thing that we can say 'if we fix that it will work'.

"We need to punch our weight in tournaments. We have not done that in 50 years."

Hodgson is asked about claims that some England players lost faith in his tactical appriach at Euro 2016.

He says: "If it was true they disguised it very well from the players and coaching staff.

"The game you are talking about against Slovakia we dominated from start to finish. The only problem was our failure to take chances."

He's asked what he said in the dresisng room at half-time and full-time against Iceland.

"I don't think that's a matter for the public, what's said in the dressing room, stays in the dressing room."
