It's not just England's players who are coming home with their tails between their legs - mascot Leo the Lion was unceremoniously dumped under some baggage last night, before being chucked onto the back of a lorry.

    It's a cruel old game.

Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurdsson has suggested England were complacent before their defeat last night.

Sigurdsson scored Iceland's equalising goal before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson got the winner.

"They thought this would be a walk in the park but we had faith in our ability," Sigurdsson said.

"It went well. We didn't feel that England created any chances. We were just heading away long balls. I wasn't stressed in the second half."

Roger Federer has hailed Marcus Willis as one of the great Wimbledon fairytales after the British qualifier beat Ricardas Berankis to set up a dream clash with the seven-time champion.

Willis is ranked 772 in the world and just months ago the 25-year-old, who works as a coach to amateur players, was considering calling time on a professional career that appeared to be going nowhere - before his girlfriend persuaded him not to.

"It's one of the best stories in a long time in our sport," Federer said.

"This is the kind of story we need. I think it's great. I'm very excited to be playing him actually. It's not something I get to do very often."

Former England captain Alan Shearer has given his backing to Gareth Southgate and Glenn Hoddle to replace Roy Hodgson.

Shearer, who has also said he would offer his experience to whoever is appointed, told BBC Sport: "Southgate fits the FA's remit and he's done a very good job with the Under-21s.

"Hoddle is a great coach who's still got a lot to offer. If they went down that route, I would back it."

Uefa's system stupid - Podolskipublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 28 June 2016

    Euro 2016

Germany forward Lukas Podolski isn't a fan of Uefa's new 24-team format for Euro 2016, not that he says it matters to his side...

"The group stage was a little bit strange, because Uefa did some stupid things with the system. It's not about the smaller teams, it's about the decisions," he said.

"You lose the first two games and you still have a chance to get through to the next round. So it is a bit confused but for us, it doesn't matter."

Leinster and Ireland wing Luke Fitzgerald has been forced to retire from rugby because of a serious neck injury aged 28.

Fitzgerald has struggled with the problem for several years and suffered another set-back in Leinster's Pro12 final defeat by Connacht in May.

"I've had a wonderful rugby career which makes it easy for me to move on to the next stage of my life," he said.

The 34-times capped Irish player won a Grand Slam in 2009, a Six Nations in 2015 and three Heineken Cups.
