Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw has admitted he feared he might never play again after breaking his leg.

The 21-year-old returned to action at the weekend after his injury in a Champions League game last September.

"When I had my first game on Saturday, I felt so emotional," said Shaw. "It's the best feeling ever.

"There was a fear of how long it was going to take or whether I would play again. Now I am looking forward to pre-season and getting fully fit."

Thomas Armstrong: Went to Big Sam's last Toon game. Away at Stoke in FA cup, played Micheal Owen as a lone striker. Painful to watch long balls

Grundy: If he picks players on form he will do fine. England team has been stale for years due to picking 'big names & ego' players

Chris Pollard: We've had winners before, Capello, Eriksson won trophies in big leagues at big clubs & failed, why not try something different?

    Olympics

IAAF president Sebastian Coe commented: "While we are thankful that our rules and our power to uphold our rules and the anti-doping code have been supported, this is not a day for triumphant statements. I didn't come into this sport to stop athletes from competing.

"It is our federation's instinctive desire to include, not exclude. Beyond Rio the IAAF taskforce will continue to work with Russia to establish a clean safe environment for its athletes so that its federation and team can return to international recognition and competition."

    Allardyce 'a great appointment'published at 10:01 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

    Football

Some final thoughts from the callers to BBC Radio 5 live this morning:

"Sam will give the team confidence. We have great players but then they go out together and they play like a pub team.

"I think it is a great appointment."

"I hope Sam proves me wrong and I wish him the best of luck but I feel like the opportunity was there to bring a younger person in.

"I think Alan Shearer should be involved."

'Mourinho can make Man Utd matter again'published at 09:58 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

    Football

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport in Shanghai

"Already it is clear Jose Mourinho can make Manchester United matter again.

"After three years of not even competing for the Premier League title, United were in danger of slipping out of contention for major honours.

"Mourinho cannot be guaranteed to make that happen.

"What he can do, as Sir Alex Ferguson used to do, is control the media agenda.

"So, whether it be England, Paul Pogba or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mourinho has an opinion that makes news.

"The Chinese journalists certainly liked it. They applauded him on the way out."

'We are trying to do suits by measure'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

    Football

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was asked why he left Zlatan Ibrahimovic home but took England players, who went further at Euro 2016, to China.

"The best suits are suits by measure. You go for a size that fits you - same for players.

"No two players are the same. The decision on Zlatan is the consequence of many hours of study. He was out one match before the English guys.

"The body and mind is different. Even things you don't have to know. Players prepare in a different way.

"We are trying to do suits by measure and be perfect for the person. The way I am trying to build the team is more important than the player who will play as striker. I am trying to change the profile. The striker is the easy one to finish the puzzle.

Sven and AllardyceImage source, Getty Images

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has been on BBC Radio 5 live this morning, discussing the imminent appointment of Sam Allardyce.

"I think it is good. Sam's been in English football for a long time. He's always been doing very well.

"What is successful for England? Is it quarter-final or semi-final? Winning?

"I know he is very organised. He knows all the players and he wants the job.

"I know the fans and the FA are dreaming about reaching semi-finals and finals and winning a big tournament," adding that England's World Cup triumph in 1966 is "a long time ago".

Allardyce splits opinionpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

    Football

Fair to say that, predictably, Sam Allardyce's impending appointment as England boss has split opinion.

One fan has told BBC Radio 5 live: "I think the most crucial job that an England manager has is picking the best team. That is not necessarily the best players.

"We need someone with a lot of self-belief and a lot of character.

"There are massive expectation on the England team and I think it's a little unfair."

But, the opinion wasn't shared by the next caller: "I don't agree with the appointment at all. It is unimaginative and uninspiring.

"The guy is not going to able to find a rough diamond like he does in club football. You have a set number of players to deal with and that is it.

"He has no clue about international football."

You can listen to the show, and maybe call up and have your say, here.
