  1. Masuaku cannot face Romanian sidepublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

West Ham's new left-back Arthur Masuaku will not be eligible for their Europa League qualifier with Astra Giurgiu, because he has already played for Olympiakos in Champions League qualifying.

However, if the Hammers progress, the former France Under-19 defender can then play for them in the group stages.

United say he has signed a four-year contract in the story on their website, but a three-year contract on their tweet. So who knows how long the deal is for?

  2. 'To play with Payet will be crazy'published at 11:41 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

West Ham's new signing Arthur Masuaku played for Olympiakos for two years, winning the Greek title each time, after his 2014 move from Valenciennes in his native France.

“It’s a big honour for me to be part of this club,” said the 22-year-old. “I was speaking with my agent about some opportunities, but when he told me about West Ham and also the coach, I didn’t think twice, so in my mind, it was West Ham.

“Now, to be able to play with players like Dimitri Payet, it’s going to be crazy. I can’t wait to play with him and also all the rest of the team.

“For me, the Premier League is the biggest league in the world. When I was 18, my target was to come here, so now I am here, I have to prove myself to the fans and to the team so that I can play for this big club.”

  10. Terry injured in Germanypublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

Speaking of Premier League centre-backs being injured in pre-season friendlies yesterday...

John Terry came off with a head injury against Werder Bremen.

However, he wrote on Facebook afterwards: "Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm OK. I came off as a precaution after I got a knock to my head and neck during the game."

  11. Arsenal running out of centre-backspublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

Arsenal could have a defensive crisis after Gabriel's injury late on in last night's 3-2 friendly win over Manchester City.

The Brazilian centre-back had to go off on a stretcher in (the appropriately named) injury time. Fellow centre-half Per Mertesacker is a long-term absentee.

It would leave Calum Chambers and Laurent Koscielny as their only fit senior centre-backs and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is concerned about putting Koscielny back in after Euro 2016 duty.

After the friendly in Gothenburg, Wenger was asked about Gabriel. "He’s in pain. Let’s hope the pain is not a sign of bad news. The only thing we have to know now is how big the damage is with his ligament."

"Inter would like to place on record its thanks to Roberto for the work carried out with the team since joining in November 2014.

"Last season the club led Serie A until the Christmas break, ending the season in fourth place and qualifying for the Uefa Europa League.

"We thank Roberto for the work and commitment he has shown the club over the past 20 months."

  14. De Boer to replace Mancini at Interpublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

    BBC Sport

Inter Milan have announced the departure of manager Roberto Mancini.

The former Manchester City boss will be replaced by Frank de Boer, who is believed to have agreed a three-year contract.

Mancini's position had been in doubt due to his misgivings over Inter's summer transfer business.

De Boer, 46, left Ajax in the summer and had been linked with the Southampton job following Ronald Koeman's departure for Everton, another role with which the Dutchman had been linked.

  16. What's the Mata?published at 10:33 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

Another big talking point from yesterday was also on Manchester United (don't worry, we'll start talking about other teams soon).

Juan Mata came on as a substitute with half an hour left and then Jose Mourinho, who sold him to United from Chelsea, brought him off in injury time. Afterwards the Portuguese said it was because Mata was the smallest player on the pitch and he wanted to prepare for long balls.

But ex-England midfielder Danny Murphy is not convinced.

"I don't buy Mourinho's excuse," he said. "They have a lot of history at Chelsea, and now he has embarrassed Mata in front of his supporters.

"You don't do that unless you are trying to send the player a message and I cannot see how Mata can stay after that."

  17. Pogba closes in on world-record Man Utd movepublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

Soon before the game, United confirmed that Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba was coming for a medical before competing his transfer.

The fee will be 105m euros, or £89m.

(It would have worked out at £80.7m the day before Britain voted to leave the European Union.)

Apparently the medical is going to last a couple of days so expect this to drag on for a bit longer.

  18. Man Utd win at Wembley againpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 8 August 2016

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the winner yesterday as Manchester United won their 21st Community Shield with a 2-1 victory over Leicester.

Jesse Lingard gave United the opener with a fine solo goal, dribbling about 40 yards before firing home, but Jamie Vardy levelled when he took advantage of Marouane Fellaini’s Kamikaze backpass.

But Ibrahimovic grabbed the headlines, of which there will be many this season, with a header which went in off the post.

You can watch the highlights in this entry (if you are in the UK).
