Alan Fisher of Tottenham On My Mind:, external "Twice a season the reticent Spurs chairman Daniel Levy emerges from the shadows to take centre stage. It's deadline day. 

"Against type he did our main business early. Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama provide choice and competition up front and in defensive midfield, and the squad are signed up to long-term contracts. I expect a third buy, Marseille winger Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, to go through and give us the option of pace in attack.

"Then it all went quiet. Sales of Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason weaken the squad if not the first-choice team, Alex Pritchard and Nacer Chadli less so. 

"Quality costs money, now more than ever. So far there is little sign of Levy recognising this to deepen the squad plus add a classy midfield playmaker to rival Christian Eriksen. Low bids for Moussa Sissoko and Isco have been rejected. Could be a day of surprises or disappointment for Spurs fans. Typical Levy in fact."

Let's kick things off with some thoughts on Tottenham...

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will not be making any deadline day signings after pushing through a £50m double signing earlier this week.

The Gunners brought in Deportivo La Coruna forward Lucas Perez and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Germany international Mustafi, 24, who won the World Cup in 2014, joins for a fee in excess of £35m, while uncapped Spaniard Perez, 27, scored 17 goals in 37 games for Deportivo last season.

"We have no plans for anyone else now," he said.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis said on 12 August that his team needed four or five more players and since then they have added winger Nacer Chadli from Tottenham for £13m and Everton defender Brendan Galloway on loan.

"The club needs a lift. We need five players to come in and make a difference straightaway - we need almost half a team," Pulis told BBC WM.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew said his team had lost two "iconic" players with the exits of Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie, although the Eagles have fended off a Spurs bid for winger Wilfried Zaha.

Palace have already signed striker Christian Benteke for £27m from Liverpool and Chelsea forward Loic Remy on a season-long loan but could yet do more business. Jack Wilshere has been suggested as a potential addition, with Arsenal keen to give the England international some game time.

Brighton completed a deal late last night, signing Belgium left-back Sebastien Pocognoli from West Brom.

The 29-year-old joins the Seagulls on a season-long deal.

Seagulls boss Chris Hughton said: “We are delighted to add Sebastien to our squad. He has a vast amount of experience, having played in some of the top divisions in Europe, as well as in the Champions League."

Arsenal's £50m double signing of Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi pushed top flight summer transfer window spending to the brink of the £1bn mark.

It has already surpassed the previous high of £870m set last year.

Twelve clubs have set new transfer records for single deals, benefiting from the new £5.1bn television deal.

So, what should you expect today to bring?

Fans, players and club officials will be ready for one of the busiest days of the 2016-17 football season when the summer transfer window closes on Wednesday, 31 August.

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of a day that is like Christmas Day for football fans.

Unlike Santa, recent editions of transfer deadline day have failed to deliver after so much promise, but I've got a feeling today could be different.

With transfer-window spending having already reached a record high, and no loan window for lower league clubs to fall back on any more, this deadline day - above all others - is well-primed to throw up a few surprises.

The only thing missing is Harry Redknapp hanging out of a car window...
