Oxford have to pay 'above budget' for Nelsonpublished at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2016

Oxford United have been told to pay a minimum of £200,000 to Plymouth for defender Curtis Nelson, who moved to the U's in the summer.

A tribunal was needed because the clubs could not agree on a fee for the 23-year-old, who was out of contract. The fee could rise to £280,000.

Nelson, who was Argyle's captain, has only played five times since his summer move - with injuries hampering him.

Oxford chairman Darryl Eales said: "The figure is significantly higher than our initial expectation. This is a huge amount of money for a club such as ourselves and well above the amount budgeted."

He told L’Equipe: “I see my future at Arsenal until the date my contract ends.

“I feel good here and I want to play at the highest level for as long as possible.

“I still feel I’ve got the gas to do it. After, for sure I’d prefer to be playing, but it will be for me to find my place.

“I won’t lie, there have been times I’ve been disappointed and not happy with my situation. But the coach knows that. He’s the one who makes the choices."

What do two footballers, one World Cup winner, a Croatian high-jumper and Alan Curbishley all have in common? It's a question we've often asked at Sportsday Towers.

The answer is, of course, that they're all celebrating their birthdays today. Here's that roll call in full...

Former England footballer and 1966 World Cup winner Martin Peters is 73, Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano turns 36, ex-Chelsea man and current Tampa Bay Rowdie, Joe Cole, is 35, retired Australia fast bowler Brett Lee marks the big 4-0, Croatian high-jumper Blanka Vlasic is 33 and Llewellyn Charles Curbishley (or "Alan" to you and me), is 59.

    Happy birthday to you all.

In Spanish law, any sentence of under two years for a first-time offender with a non-violent crime does not usually require actually going to prison.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi benefited from that earlier this year.
