It wasn't definitive but Jose Mourinho has left the door open to a Manchester United future for Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Even when Schweinsteiger came back to first-team training, and then appeared on the United bench, there were those at the club who felt it was merely the prelude to a summer move to Major League Soccer.
Now Mourinho says he might stay.
It is hard to envisage the 32-year-old having a meaningful role to play at Old Trafford.
But, as Mourinho points out, Schweinsteiger has the power. He also has a contract that does not run out until June 2018.

Scott Lillico: Absolutely shock. Might be a massive jump, but I'm thinking this is Wehrlein's opportunity to show how good he is.
Maria Chi-Band: He's done what he set out to do and now leaves in the slickest way possible. Good for him!
Matt's Glory Days: Totally unexpected but fair play to Rosberg, if it feels right for him that's what matters.
Manchester City v Chelsea (Saturday, 12:30 GMT)
Pep Guardiola is well aware of the dangers presented by his former Barcelona winger Pedro, who has scored three goals in his last five league matches.
"I hope (Pedro) doesn’t perform well tomorrow. I have to thank him, he made me a better manager. Near the box he’s a killer."
West Ham United v Arsenal (Saturday, 17:30 GMT)
West Ham have not won in their last five matches and entertain Arsenal on Saturday.
"We were disappointed to lose on Wednesday but we have a massive game on Saturday and we know what have to do to get a positive result," says Hammers boss Slaven Bilic.
Andre Ayew is back in training and should be in the squad again. The Ghanaian sat out the defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday with an injury.
West Ham are unbeaten in their last four games at home, having last lost to Southampton 3-0 back in September, and Bilic adds: "It helps for us to train at the London Stadium and our performances are now improving like they should be."

Former Formula 1 driver Max Chilton also spoke about Lewis Hamilton during his chat on BBC Radio 5 live following Nico Rosberg's shock retirement, and he thinks the Brit will be 'rubbing his hands'.
Chilton said: "Mercedes will replace him (Rosberg) with someone quick. But this is a fantastic opportunity for Lewis Hamilton.
"He’s going to have the upper hand for the first few races. If you keep that going, it’s likely he’ll become world champion next year because of that news.
“Lewis will miss that competitive edge. They’ve been rivals since they were young."
Sunderland v Leicester City (Saturday 15:00 GMT)
After two wins in their last three games, David Moyes thinks his Sunderland side need to maintain their level of performance to move off the bottom of the Premier League.
He said: "We've deservedly picked up some good results but they're gone now. We have to think about what's next and more points.
"We have to pick up some wins before January and if we do that we can head into 2017 in good spirits."
This week's opponents Leicester also got a mention. "Leicester have been brilliant in the Champions League and they're a very good side," adds Moyes.
"Vardy and Mahrez were excellent but I also thought their back four and goalkeeper were exceptional last year too."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could stay at Old Trafford beyond the January transfer window.
Schweinsteiger, 32, has spoken to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire and has been contacted by other US clubs.
It had been expected he would leave United despite making a surprise return to the first-team after he was made to train on his own by Mourinho at the start of the season.
However, the United boss says the situation might have changed. "Of course he can (stay)," said Mourinho.
"If you have a contract you are the powerful one that can decide your future. In the summer we try to make something happen for Bastian to get a different future. He decided to stay in difficult circumstances.
"In January he is the powerful one - and with better feelings than before."

Some more quotes from Nico Rosberg on his stunning decision to retire from Formula 1, less than a week after winning the world title.
“This season, I tell you, it was so damn tough," says Rosberg. "I pushed like crazy in every area after the disappointments of the last two years; they fuelled my motivation to levels I had never experienced before.
"And of course that had an impact on the ones I love, too – it was a whole family effort of sacrifice, putting everything behind our target. I cannot find enough words to thank my wife Vivian; she has been incredible.
"She understood this year was the big one, our opportunity to do it, and created the space for me to get full recovery between every race, looking after our daughter each night, taking over when things got tough and putting our championship first."
