Williams has been missing with shoulder and knee problems since the US Open semi-finals in September.

She beat France's  Pauline Parmentier 6-3 6-4 on her return in the ASB Classic.

"You always feel rusty for your first match," she said. "But mentally I knew how to get it back and get in there."

Cockerill sacking 'a sad day for Leicester Tigers'published at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Rugby Union

The sacking of Richard Cockerill is 'a sad day for Leicester Tigers', according to 5 live's rugby union reporter Chris Jones.

Cockerill was sacked by the Premiership club on Monday after nearly eight years in charge.

"Even though they reached the two semi-finals last year that’s not been enough to protect Cockerill," Jones said.

Baggies bounce back against Hullpublished at 09:18 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Football

West Bromwich Albion took advantage of a second-half Hull capitulation to record back-to-back Premier League wins for just the second time this season.

The Baggies fell behind after a sluggish start when Robert Snodgrass struck to continue his fine form.

Hull managed 11 shots by the interval but as half-time neared, the home side began to probe and they levelled when the unmarked Chris Brunt headed in a corner after the restart.

The away side's slack defending was punished again when Gareth McAuley powered a header in, referee Mark Clattenburg awarding the goal through use of goalline technology.

Boro and Leicester in goalless drawpublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Football

Middlesbrough and Leicester played out a dull goalless draw at the Riverside to boost their respective effort to pull clear of the bottom three.

In a game bereft of clear-cut chances, there were just four efforts on target throughout the whole 90 minutes.

Middlesbrough wanted a penalty when Robert Huth brought down Adama Traore and Boro's Gaston Ramirez lashed the best opportunity wide from six yards.

Leicester, without a Premier League away win this season compared to 11 in last term's title-winning campaign, saw Leonardo Ulloa head a corner straight at Brad Guzan.

Juan Mata made up for Antonio Valencia's remarkable miss as he opened the scoring in the second-half, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the lead.

To add to Slaven Bilic's woes, Ibrahimovic was one of three players offside when United scored their second.

Sunderland 2-2 Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp cannot 'explain' result

Fair play to the Liverpool players. If my boss offered me a day off, I'd snap his hand off. Not the Reds, though. When offered the chance to opt out of Monday's match at Sunderland if they were too tired by manager Jurgen Klopp, they all turned him down.

"I told the players if nobody wanted to play I would never speak about it and not tell anyone, but nobody came. That was a good thing," said Klopp.

Unfortunately for Klopp's side, they were only able to get a draw at the Stadium of Light, leaving them five points behind Chelsea, who visit Tottenham on Wednesday (20:00 GMT).

Southampton lose third successive gamepublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2017

    Football

Goals from Enner Valencia, Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku gave Everton manager Ronald Koeman something to smile about, as his side beat his former club Southampton.

Valencia tapped in Lukaku's saved header from close range to register his first goal for the club, before he won a penalty after being fouled by Maya Yoshida.

Baines converted the penalty before Lukaku hammered Tom Davies pass into the top corner to give the home side a comprehensive victory.

Southampton have now lost three Premier League games in a row - their worst run since December 2014 when they lost four in a row.

Pep Guardiola was left grumpy despite ten-man Manchester City held off a spirited Burnley to secure a 2-1 victory.

Fernandinho was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Johan Gudmundsson, which left the Manchester manager fuming.

Gael Clichy opened the scoring in the second half before Sergio Aguero scored from a tight angle.

Ben Mee's goal upped Burnley's tempo but despite Andre Gray's late chance, the visitors could not force an equaliser.
