'He was a true football man'published at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2017

    Graham Taylor tributes

Former England international Peter Shilton, who worked as goalkeeping coach in Taylor's backroom staff with the national team, is the latest of many of his former friends and colleagues to describe him as a "true football man".

"The way he came through from the grassroots at Lincoln all the way to the England job, marks him out as a real football man and I always liked and respected him," said Shilton.

"He had his own style, of course, but he really knew and loved the game and I enjoyed working with him. He was a true football man."

David Farquharson: Very very sad news re death of Graham Taylor. Many wonderful childhood memories as he led Watford from 4th to 1st division.

Ross: Taylor had been a dealt a bad England squad. Tried his best with what he had. Never his fault.

Graham Taylor will be remembered by many for his unfulfilling spell in charge of England - but by plenty more as an outstanding club manager at Watford and Aston Villa and one of the nicest, most genuine men in the game.

The reaction to Taylor's death on Thursday at the age of 72, and the affection expressed for him, was the true measure of his standing inside and outside football.

Above all, this is a loss that will be felt keenly throughout football's generations because the game has lost one its true gentlemen.

It's been a busy hour or so for the Premier League's player registration office!

Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley will have a medical at Watford on Thursday after the two clubs agreed a loan deal for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2015 but has made only two appearances since 5 November.

Cleverley spent the 2009-10 season on loan with Watford, who were then in the Championship, winning the club's Player of the Season award.

He will join a Hornets side who are winless in five Premier League games.

A little more on the news Morgan Schneiderlin has joined Everton from Manchester United.

The initial fee is £20m, which could rise to £24m with add-ons. That would mean that United would almost recoup the £25m they paid Southampton for the France midfielder in July 2015.

The 27-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract to link up again with Toffees boss Ronald Koeman, whom he played for at Southampton.

He has said he is as "hungry as ever and ready to eat football again". Steady on, Morgan.

Den Francis: I met him years ago just as he became Watford manager. He asked me if I wanted his autograph and I replied, "No thanks! Graham, I'm a QPR supporter".

I say one thing about him though and that is at least he chatted to me for around 10 minutes, not like some of them who wouldn't give you the time of day.

If only I had known how far he'd go as England manager, perhaps I should have got his autograph.

Not everyone liked him, like some of the press but he spoke to me like a gentleman and that meant a lot to me. R.I.P Graham.

Narsingh, who has scored twice in 20 appearances for PSV this season, was also a Swans target under Bob Bradley.

"A dream has come true playing in the Premier League, playing for a big club like Swansea, it was not difficult to think about it," Narsingh explained.

Alan Jones: I refereed a youth team match between Portsmouth and Watford. On the same afternoon Watford's first team were due to play Bournemouth, so they stopped at Eastleigh to watch the youth match on their way there.

Graham came into the dressing room afterwards and thanked me for the game, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He looked at the towel around my waist and asked me to get a new one, as he did not like orange. He was a very charming and supportive ambassador for football. RIP.
