Barkley to stay or go?published at 12:21 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Football

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Ross Barkley may have been front and centre in the video launching Everton's new kit for next season on Tuesday night - but whether he will be wearing it when August arrives is in serious doubt,

Everton manager Ronald Koeman says Barkley will be sold if he has not agreed a new contract by the time this Sunday's final game at Arsenal kicks off and the ruthess Dutchman does not bluff.

If, as is reported on Merseyside this morning, Everton will demand £50m for Barkley if he fails to sign, the 23-year-old faces a serious dilemma.

Spurs have been linked with Barkley, but that does not sound like the sort of fee chairman Daniel Levy will pay.

Everton will not increase their contract offer so Barkley and his agent could be left in limbo or making a rather awkward climbdown.

Koeman, it would appear, would shed no tears if it came to losing Barkley and is already planning to bring players in that would compensate for his departure, with Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ajax captain Davy Klaassen prime targets.

Europa loss will prove costlypublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

Manchester United will miss out on £50m if they fail to beat Ajax in the Europa League final on 24 May.

The game in Stockholm is their only remaining chance of reaching next season's Champions League.

Failure to qualify for Europe's flagship club competition for a second successive season would trigger a £21m penalty clause in their 10-year, £750m sponsorship deal with Adidas.

United also expect to earn up to £30m more by being in the Champions League.

The 35-year-old midfielder is coming to the end of his 11th season at the club and has a testimonial on 4 June.

Contract talks have progressed well, and confidence has been expressed on both sides that an extension to his existing deal, which expires on 30 June, will reach a positive conclusion.

Carrick joined United from Tottenham in an £18.6m deal in 2006 and has made 457 appearances in all competitions.

WTA criticises Sharapova wildcard callpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Maria SharapovaImage source, Getty Images

French Open organisers had "no grounds to penalise" Maria Sharapova by denying her a wildcard entry to the tournament, says the Women's Tennis Association.

The Russian, 30, was ranked too low to gain direct entry as she continues her return from a 15-month drugs ban.

The French Tennis Federation (FFT) chose not to hand Sharapova a wildcard to "protect" the sport's standards.

"I don't agree with the basis for their decision. She has complied with the sanction," said WTA chief Steve Simon.

John Tudor: Give points for the respective progress in cup competitions and add these to the league points. This would give the added bonus of making clubs take all completions seriously

Chinese brother and sister Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li become the majority shareholders of Championship side Reading.

The pair began negotiations to purchase a 75% stake from the Championship club's Thai owners in November.

The Premier League, who have a say in takeovers of clubs who could compete in their league, had been reported to be "cautious" about the deal.

The English Football League released a statement on Wednesday which said they have "no objections to the change of control application made by Reading Football Club".
