Manchester United will be without defender Eric Bailly, who is suspended after his red card in the semi-final win over Celta Vigo.

Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic - who scored four goals against England in the first game at the Friends Arena in 2012 and will have a statue built outside the ground - will not play after suffering a serious knee injury earlier this month.

Defenders Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo and winger Ashley Young are all also out.

Ajax, who finished in second in the Dutch Eredivisie, have left-back Nick Viergever banned, while Lasse Schone is expected to be the only player over the age of 25 in their starting XI.

"I think it’s very difficult to think about football.

"But it’s also an opportunity for Manchester United to go out into the world and represent this fantastic city of Manchester and hopefully win and show that in adversity we will show fighting spirit and there’s no way we are going to give in to cowards who bring acts like that into the world.

"That is, of course, an opportunity but I have to say I find it very difficult to get excited about this game."

It is no surprise who former Ajax defender Johnny Heitinga is supporting tonight.

The 33-year-old former Everton and Fulham man played for Ajax during two spells of his career and won the Dutch Eredivisie twice.

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has been talking to BBC Sport and is asked if the United players will be affected by the Monday attack at the Manchester Arena that killed 22 people.

"It affects people in different ways; football is insignificant in moments like this," said Giggs. "They’ve chosen to play the game and I think the players will just get on with it but it’s a difficult time especially with the local lads who may know people that have been affected.

"It’s a big game, I don’t know whether it’s the biggest in history but it’s an important game. It’s a competition which United have never won and with what is at stake, getting into the Champions League.

"Ajax is a good young team and hopefully as a United fan hopefully we will win. Ajax are a young dynamic team who have looked really good in some games but I think we just edge it in experience that we got and Jose’s experience in big games."

Ajax coach Peter Bosz was very measured and respectful in his pre-match media conference here in Stockholm last night ahead of the Europa League Final with Manchester United.

He opened with a message of sympathy for the people of Manchester after the attack at the MEN Arena and put tonight's game in perspective as he said: "We would like to express our sympathies with the victims who fell and the feeling that prevails is that the final doesn't have the glow it should have.

"It should be a football festival but because of these events we are all affected."

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has been talking to BBC Sport about Monday's attack at the Manchester Arena, which killed 22 people.

"It’s been a really tragic event, it’s very, very sad and heart-breaking, something that is difficult to comprehend," said Schmeichel.

"We live in a world where these attacks happen quite often, too often, but this time they attacked children and I just can’t get my head around that, it’s really really sad.

"So yesterday, the day before, and days to come, are very sad days for Manchester and England and everyone, but I have to say – I was in Manchester yesterday, it was also a very beautiful day, to see how the Mancunians got together, a cross of beliefs, religion, social status, lifestyle, and held each other and I was very, very proud to be a part of the Mancunian community yesterday."

Manchester United are in one cup final tonight but one of their players who is on loan will miss out on his own cup final - because he got a tattoo.

Right-back Guillermo Varela, 24, who has only made four United appearances, has been with German club Eintracht Frankfurt and was in line to play in Saturday's German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund.

However, Varela defied club orders and on his right forearm got a tattoo, which has become infected.

"The club cannot tolerate that a player would defy instructions," said Eintracht sporting director Fredi Bobic. "We'd been thinking about a loan extension. But that won't happen. He'll be suspended with immediate effect."
