Allardyce resigns as Crystal Palace bosspublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

    Football

Sam Allardyce has resigned as Crystal Palace manager five months after he joined the Premier League club.

Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew in December on a two-and-half-year deal with the Eagles one point above the relegation zone.

The 62-year-old, who had an ill-fated one-game spell as England boss, led the club to eight wins in 21 games to guide them to a 14th-place finish.

"I have no ambitions to take another job," Allardyce said in a statement.

"I want to be able to savour life while I am still relatively young, and when I am still relatively healthy enough to do all the things I want to do, like travel, spend more time with my family and grandchildren without the huge pressure that comes with being a football manager."

Football, for 90 minutes, can bring a smile back on facespublished at 09:06 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

Ajax v Manchester United (19:45 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 live

There will be commentary on tonight's Europa League final between Ajax and Manchester United on BBC Radio 5 live.

Former United and England defender Phil Neville is part of our commentary team.

"When I was told I'd be working on this match, it felt like it was like Christmas Day," said the 40-year-old. "But I don't want to be at this game now, I want to be in Manchester.

"Players like Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, they've been brought up in this city. Paul Pogba was brought up in the city from the age of 14. They will find it difficult.

"From what would be the biggest games of their careers - it doesn't feel important. It's now a game of football of 22 players and it should be enjoyed. Football, for 90 minutes, can bring a smile back on faces of people of Manchester."

  7. Manchester United are 'numb' - Woodwardpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

We have already had some quotes from Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward talking about the mood in the club after the Manchester attacks, and here is a bit more of what he said in an interview with MUTV.

"Words don't really do justice for how we all feel. We're numb," said Woodward.

“The events were sickening and all our thoughts are with the victims and the families affected by it. It was very sombre flying over with the directors and it was all we were talking about, to be honest.

"We've met with Uefa and sat with them and gone through different things we can do around the game, and they accepted we can wear black armbands and have a minute's silence for the victims.

"Success on the pitch [against Ajax in the Europa League final] really is nothing compared to the pain and suffering going on back home, that is really where our thoughts are at this point in time."

Ajax manager Peter Bosz said: "What happened in Manchester is something we all feel in Ajax and on behalf of all of us at Ajax we express our sympathies with the victims that fell.

"The feeling that prevails is the final does not have the glow it should have.

"It should be a football feast but because of the events in Manchester we are affected. It is horrible. My sympathies are heartfelt."

  9. Europa League final to go aheadpublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 24 May 2017

Uefa, football's European governing body, has confirmed tonight's Europa League final will go ahead and that a minute's silence will be observed before the game. The opening ceremony will also be considerably reduced as a mark of respect for the victims of the Manchester attack.

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said he was "deeply saddened" and shocked that "so many innocent people lost their lives".

A Uefa statement said there was "currently no specific intelligence" to suggest tonight's game could be a target for further attacks.

"Uefa has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the very beginning of the project," it said. "Furthermore, a number of additional security measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April."
