  1. Would this be the most remarkable comeback in F1 history?published at 11:20 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

    This a remarkable story.

A life-changing injury won't stop Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica.

He will take a step further towards returning to the sport when he drives a 2017 Renault at a test in Hungary on 2 August. The 32-year-old Pole has not raced in Formula 1 since a horrific rally crash in 2011.

He suffered a partially severed right arm and multiple fractures and a return would be one of the most remarkable comebacks in sporting history.

After such a brilliant weekend for women's sport in England, this will come as a real blow to women's rugby...

Contracts for England women's XVs squad will not be renewed after the forthcoming Rugby World Cup despite the side being defending champions.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) says its focus will switch to the sevens game after the tournament, which starts in Ireland next month.

England's retired World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi said the news was "very disappointing".

It is understood several current squad members will move to a sevens contract.

    'I'm so honoured'published at 11:05 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

Eilidh Doyle's had a Monday morning to savor.

The Scottish 400m hurdler has been voted British team captain for next month's World Athletics Championships in London.

All the members of the squad voted for who they wanted in the role and Doyle won a ballot, beating defending world champions Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford to the title.

“I was completely shocked when I found out but it’s really special. It means so much more because I my team-mates have chosen me. I was so honoured," she told BBC Radio 5live.

“I have been fortunate enough that I have been at a home Olympic Games and a home Commonwealth Games.

“I will just try to draw on those experiences of what it meant and how we performed at those championships and use that to hopefully get the team fired up for London."

Martial the mysterypublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Football

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport in Santa Clara

Much of the noise around France forward Anthony Martial this summer has centred around him potentially being used as bait to lure Ivan Perisic to Manchester United from Inter Milan.

Considering Martial is 21 - seven years younger than Croatia winger Perisic - it would seem a strange move for United manager Jose Mourinho to agree to.

But Martial has had a largely inconsistent two years at Old Trafford and former United defender Gary Neville said in January the player needed to "realise his potential".

Watching him weave past Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal, then roll a pass to Lingard for United's opener as Raphael Varane closed in, it was easy to see why Mourinho's predecessor, Louis van Gaal, sanctioned his £36m transfer two years ago.

Those are the sparks Martial must show more often.

Right decision? Wrong decision? Brave decision?published at 10:25 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Football

England, penalties and referees have always been a heady mix at international tournaments.

A "brave" decision helped the Lionesses beat Spain last night, with the official changing her mind about a penalty after Lucy Bronze apparently recited the rules to her.

With England leading 1-0 in their Group D match, Spain were awarded a spot-kick when the ball struck striker Ellen White's arm in the area.

But the decision was quickly reversed thanks to defender Bronze's intervention.

"Before the tournament, Uefa send referees in to have meetings with you and they said if it hits you or is a deflection it's not really a handball - you can't really help it," said Bronze.

"I saw it right in front of me and I was like 'that is not a penalty' - it's hit her leg and then gone up and hit her arm. It's a deflection and [the referee] said 'you're right, it's my mistake'.

When shoot-outs go wrongpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Football

We may have witnessed the worst penalty shoot-out of the season...and the season's not even started yet.

Manchester United's pre-season friendly with Real Madrid went to pens after it finished 1-1.

Seven out of 10 spot-kicks were missed, with Casemiro's wild effort ensuring United edged it 2-1.

Despite the penalty shenanigans, United fans seem to be delighted with the performance of French play-maker Anthony Martial, who set up Jesse Lingard's opener.

But team-mate Victor Lindelof had a game to forget. United's new £31m defender gifted Madrid a penalty and equaliser when he brought down Theo Hernandez with a rash challenge, which Casemiro converted.

Lindelof was also one of the seven who missed from the spot.
