It's been empowering. Sport is sport whether its male sport or female sport. The fact it can create this emotion inside.

It shows in this poll and everyone who has come on this evening and spoken you can hear the joy and that's what sport brings and that's why we love sport.

  4. 'It was a really surreal moment'published at 22:01 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

After hearing commentary of the moment she won gold on BBC Radio 5 Live, Ennis-Hill said:

"It is nearly eight years ago but it’s still so fresh and so raw and when I hear it it makes me all twitchy and nervous and fills me with all those emotions again that I had on that day.

"I mean it had just been so much hard work, so much sacrifice, so much drive and it was just that feeling of disbelief. It was just a really really surreal, disbelieving moment and I couldn’t believe it had actually happened."

To be sat there watching this super talented athlete achieve her dreams, just talking about it now I’m getting goosebumps because you always want athletes to go and achieve what they’ve dreamt of achieving and I knew Jess was one of those that wasn’t going to let anything get in her way.

  7. 'The crowd was so loud I couldn't hear my name'published at 21:55 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

When asked what it was like to run the 800m that won her gold, Ennis-Hill told BBC Radio 5 Live:

"It was nerve-wracking to say the least. The 800m is every heptathlete's dread.

"It’s their worst event and we go into it fearing it. It’s the last event and we’re absolutely exhausted physically and mentally and then we’ve got to produce a fantastic run over two laps.

"I knew how much was resting on those two laps and I knew how much I wanted it and then how much everybody else wanted it as well.

"The crowd was so loud and I couldn’t hear my name for the crowd screaming. I just really tried to keep focused and use the crowd to fuel me, but also try and block them out to a certain extent to focus on my lane and my race and just really producing what I knew I was capable of doing."

  8. 'We were aware of how amazing the women were doing' - Ennis-Hillpublished at 21:54 British Summer Time 28 May 2020

Ennis-Hill continued on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport:

"At the time we were very aware of how amazing the women were doing during the Olympics.

"We kept having tallies of how everyone was getting on and everyone was saying ‘ah the females are winning on the medal table at the moment’.

"It’s created a massive legacy and showcased some amazing sports to young girls who might not have watched them or heard about them, for them to get involved and take part."

Choosing a moment from athletics was the hardest thing to do because there are so many.

What Jessica Ennis-Hill did over those two days will sit with me forever. I have never seen anything like it.

It is a day few will ever forget: 4 August 2012.

On the middle Saturday of the London Olympics, Great Britain won six gold medals, including three in athletics in the space of 48 minutes.

One of those was Jessica Ennis-Hill's heptathlon gold.

She had already almost guaranteed herself the title going into the evening's final event - the 800m.

One of the faces of the Games, Ennis-Hill powered past the rest of the field and crossed the line with her arms aloft to deafening cheers from the crowd.

So if hockey finished second, that means there is only one moment left to announce.

The nomination came from former British 100m champion Jeanette Kwakye, who arguably had the hardest job of all on her hands picking just one athletics moment for this list.

The power of the Olympics and the Paralympics - the nation gets completely gripped by it.

I'm so gutted we haven't got Tokyo this year because we have such great support in this country. The support completely blew our minds because we had no idea and to hear it now is just amazing.

That gold in Rio really came up from the lead-up to London. Our vision then was to get the gold and we didn’t quite get the gold but what we created was so powerful.

We had a few ups and downs along the way but getting to Rio we absolutely knew what we were about and we wanted to be the difference to create history and inspire the future.

It was about the group of 31 and all the squad pulling together. We were just in this zone and it was so pleasurable. Eight wins on the bounce was just amazing.

I’ve not watched that final back. I’ve listened to that bit of commentary and it’s just so raw and joyful and emotional it takes you back right away.

It’s so emotional. I’ve replayed every mistake I made that day in my head. Maybe when I’m a bit older we might sit down and watch it with our little girl.
