The end of the NFL's regular season can sometimes be a damp squib but there was no such case this year as last season's Super Bowl winners, the New England Patriots, were upset at home by the Miami Dolphins to miss the chance to earn a bye for the first round of the play-offs.

Instead it will be the Kansas City Chiefs getting a rest in the AFC as the play-offs kick off next week, while the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans secured the last two playoff spots that were still up for grabs.

In the NFC, San Francisco 49ers held off a late charge by the Seattle Seahawks to claim the top seed in the play-offs. The Seahawks were inches away from completing a last-minute comeback when tight end Jacob Hollister caught a pass on fourth down but was stopped just short of the goal line by rookie linebacker Dre Greenlawut.

With the win the 49ers (13-3) have a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the play-offs while the fifth-seeded Seahawks (11-5) take a trip to the Philadelphia Eagles to play the fourth-seeded Eagles (9-7) in a wild-card game on Sunday.

Boston Scott rushed for three touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles clinched their third straight playoff berth with a 34-17 win at the New York Giants.

Defeat would have left the door open for the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East instead but the Eagles claimed their fourth win in a row to clinch the division and a number four seed for the playoffs.

That meant the Dallas Cowboys' 47-16 win at home to the Washington Redskins was in vain.

Heading into the final Sunday of the regular season, the Tennessee Titans occupied the other playoff spot still to be decided and they secured it with a 35-14 win over the Houston Texans.

Derrick Henry rushed for 211 yards and his last carry - a 53-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the game - enabled him to pass Cleveland's Nick Chubb and clinch the NFL's regular-season rushing title with 1,540 yards. The Titans running back also scored on three and one-yard runs in the second half.

Justin Tucker kicked four field goals as the Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-10 and broke an NFL record for most rushing yards in a season.

The Steelers could have got into the playoffs with victory and a Tennessee loss at Houston but the Ravens (14-2) claimed their 12th game in a row, reaching 3,296 rushing yards for the season - the previous best was 3,165 by the New England Patriots (1978).

Having already locked up the number one seed in the AFC playoffs, the Ravens rested several regular starters, including quarterback Lamar Jackson, the MVP favourite.

The Oakland Raiders also had a slim chance of making the playoffs but the Denver Broncos withstood a two-point conversion attempt with seven seconds remaining to win 16-15.

Last season's Super Bowl runners-up the LA Rams ended their season with a 31-24 win over the Arizona Cardinals while the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Indianapolis Colts 38-20.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Gesicki with just 24 seconds left saw the Miami Dolphins upset the New England Patriots 27-24.

The Patriots beat the Dolphins 43-0 in Week Two and would have clinched a first-round playoff bye with victory on Sunday.

News of Gesicki's touchdown sparked jubilant scenes at Arrowhead Stadium as New England's defeat meant that the Kansas City Chiefs claimed the AFC's number two seed with a 31-21 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

It's the first time since 2009 that the Patriots have failed to earn a first-round playoff bye - and none of their six Super Bowl wins came from the wild-card round.

Mason Crosby kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired to give the Green Bay Packers a 23-20 win at the Detroit Lions. That was the only time the Packers led, with the Lions 17-3 up at half-time, and it clinched a first-round bye for the NFC playoffs.

Deion Jones returned a Jameis Winston interception for the game-winning touchdown on the first play of overtime as the Atlanta Falcons won 28-22 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 301 yards and one touchdown while Winston had 201 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Tampa Bay.

That saw the Bucs' QB become just the eighth player in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season - but he also became the first player to finish a season with at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, and set an NFL record for pick-sixes in a season with seven.

Drew Brees threw three touchdown passes as the New Orleans Saints won 42-10 at the Carolina Panthers to go into the playoffs with a 13-3 record.

Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey had 72 receiving yards to become the third player in NFL history to accumulate 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season - after Roger Craig (1985) and Marshall Faulk (1999).

The Cleveland Browns sacked coach Freddie Kitchens after losing 33-23 to the Cincinnati Bengals, who claimed just their second win of the year, while Eddy Pineiro drilled a 22-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining as the Chicago Bears beat the Minnesota Vikings 21-19. The New York Jets also ended the season with victory over a playoff-bound team, beating the Buffalo Bills 13-6.

Blimey...Black Monday has already started. The Cleveland Browns are the first team to sack their head coach.

The 49ers play the Seahawks in the late, late game. A 49ers win would see them take top spot, while a Seattle win would bump the Niners down to number five and put the Seahawks up to three.

The Giants keep their drive going through to the finish as the Eagles celebrate clinching the NFC East title and a place in the NFL playoffs ahead of the Dallas Cowboys. They finish the regular season with a 9-7 record.

The Eagles go three-and-out, giving it back to the Giants just before the two-minute warning.

A few weeks ago the winner of the NFC East was the side everyone wanted to face in the first round of the playoffs. It looked as though the Eagles or the Dallas Cowboys could go into the postseason with a losing record.

But few will fancy the Eagles now. They've basically been playing playoff football for weeks already, in order to stay in the hunt, and they're about to end the regular season with a fourth straight win.

This game got away from the Giants real quick. Daniel Jones is intercepted by Sidney Jones as the Giants give up another turnover.

And that's another Eagle producing a big play. They've stepped up across the board tonight. And this from a makeshift, injury-hit squad.

Boston Scott has had to get to the NFL the hard way.

He wasn't even offered a College scholarship and got into Louisiana Tech as a back-up. The 5ft 6in running back was picked in the sixth round of the NFL draft in 2018 but was released without playing for the New Orleans Saints.

He was then signed to the Eagles' practice squad this season before being called up for his NFL debut in October. Even so, he still only had two touchdowns before today.

Safe to say he's now arrived in the NFL.

The Titans are in the playoffs and will play New England Patriots in Foxboro...
