The Bengals were taking away the deep pass but Stafford was moving around and was pointing to the corner. He takes a shot to Van Jefferson but Jessie Bates plays that perfectly.

Stafford should have taken the check down but he wanted to go for the touchdown. This is what we said he can't do.

  2. Turnover - Stafford interceptedpublished at 00:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 13-10 Cincinnati Bengals

Matthew Stafford finds tight end Brycen Hopkins for a first down but four plays later he's forced to scramble out of the pocket on halfway and airs it out.

The Rams' quarterback points towards the end zone before letting rip but his pass, intended for Van Jefferson, is just short, allowing Bengals safety Jessie Bates to step in and pluck it out of the air.

Decisions like that are why Stafford tied for a league-high 17 interceptions in the regular season.

Ouch! Beckham hobbles off injuredpublished at 00:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 13-10 Cincinnati Bengals

Oh no... Odell Beckham Jr made a dream start to his first Super Bowl appearance, but his game now looks over.

On the fourth play of the Rams' drive he drops a catch and immediately clutches his left knee, without any other player near him.

The star receiver is helped off the field and looks emotional as he goes. Heartache for OBJ.

Mark: We all knew that Joe was gonna throw a TD pass... Just not that Joe.

Tony: Great play by the Bengals, keeping themselves within touching distance.

You have got to be sexy down in the red zone and design some cool plays especially when you have not been effective.

  6. touchdown

Higgins scores a touchdown for the Bengals

The Rams' defence forces two third downs but each time the Bengals convert, with Joe Burrow getting rid of the ball quickly to make a 14-yard pass to Tee Higgins before Ja'Marr Chase rushes for a first down at LA's seven-yard line.

And from there Cincinnati dial up a perfect trick play, Burrow shovelling it back to Joe Mixon, who floats a touchdown pass to a wide-open Higgins. Straight out of the playbook that one, and it wraps up a 75-yard drive for the Bengals.

  7. Bengals back in the groovepublished at 00:32 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 13-3 Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow finds Tyler Boyd and then Ja'Marr Chase down the middle for first downs, before Joe Mixon rushes for another. That puts the Bengals in Rams territory.

  8. 'Cooper Kupp sold it perfectly'published at 00:31 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

    Jason Bell
Former NFL cornerback on BBC TV

That touchdown is all about eye discipline, what you saw was the defensive backs keying in for the run. They are playing with depth so they can react but Cooper Kupp sold it perfectly. What makes him so dynamic is that he makes everything look alike.

  9. touchdown

    Media caption,

    Kupp scores an 11-yard touchdown

Cooper Kupp fakes to block then peels away to the back of the end zone and Matthew Stafford, on the run, floats it to his star receiver for an 11-yard touchdown.

You can't let the league's Offensive Player of the Year have that kind of room and expect to get away with it.

The Rams make a hash of the snap for the kick, though, so miss out on the extra point.

  10. Rams rollingpublished at 00:20 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-3 Cincinnati Bengals

And we're back with a bang as Matthew Stafford finds Odell Beckham Jr again, with the wideout making a chunk of yards after the catch before being bundled out of bounds for a 35-yard gain.

Stafford then picks out running back Darrell Henderson for another 25 yards. The Rams are back in the red zone.

  11. End of the firstpublished at 00:14 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-3 Cincinnati Bengals

That's the end of the first quarter of Super Bowl 56 and that's a solid enough start all around really.

Both defences have been tough, just the one big play from Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase but the only touchdown has come from Matthew Stafford and Odell Beckham Jr.

    All to play for!

Field goal - Bengalspublished at 00:12 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-3 Cincinnati Bengals

Ramsey gets away with one on the goal line as he grabs a chunk of Tee Higgins' shirt and that stops the Bengals receiver from catching a touchdown pass.

Instead, Cincinnati have to settle for three points from rookie kicker Evan McPherson, who is now a perfect 13 from 13 on play-off field goals this season.

  13. Chase on the casepublished at 00:09 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-0 Cincinnati Bengals

    Media caption,

Chase on the case: Chase beats Ramsey for 46 yards

Wow! Joe Burrow goes deep early, with Ja'Marr Chase lined up against star Rams defender Jalen Ramsey but he beats his man and takes a wonderful diving catch for 46 yards.

The Bengals have been full of big plays all season and that one takes them down to the 11.

  14. Rams punt againpublished at 00:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-0 Cincinnati Bengals

More solid defence from the Bengals bottles up Stafford this time around, and it's a nice 20-yard run on the punt return to set Burrow up on his own 30.

Matt Tatler: What an absolute perfect throw there for the Rams and a good start too.

Chris B: Ummm... do I regret being glad to see the back of OBJ when he left the Giants? Rams have really turned him around.

  16. Bengals blunt againpublished at 23:57 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-0 Cincinnati Bengals

Taylor is not going for it this time on a fourth-and-four and it's a Bengals punt after a three-and-out in a tough start for the Cincinnati offence.

  17. 'Odell Beckham Jr. is the key'published at 23:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Odell Beckham Jr is the key. They lost Robert Woods, him coming in here is significant and this is perfect. The empty set allowed Matt Stafford to identify the match up and when he saw man-to-man on Odell he knew he would be able to throw him open.

  18. touchdown

Touchdown - Ramspublished at 23:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 7-0 Cincinnati Bengals

    Media caption,

Odell Beckham Jr of the Los Angeles Rams scores a touchdown

The Rams strike first and it's Odell Beckham Jr with the catch.

It all looks simple as you like but it's a nice throw from Matthew Stafford, a good leap and a string pair of hands to take in the catch under pressure from Mike Hilton.

It's a 17-yard TD for Beckham, who just had too much speed for Hilton and after his season was crumbling in Cleveland, he's now catching the opening TD of the Super Bowl. What a turnaround!

  19. Kupp breaks throughpublished at 23:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 0-0 Cincinnati Bengals

Cooper Kupp's first catch is only a flat pass, but he's brilliant at getting yards after the catch and he turns it into a 20-yard gain and the Rams are now just 25 yards out.

  20. Bengals gamble backfirespublished at 23:45 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

Los Angeles Rams 0-0 Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals coach Zac Taylor goes for it on fourth down and one right at midfield, but Joe Burrow can't find a completion and now the Rams get the ball back in superb position.

Early aggression from Taylor but this time it's not paid off.
