Alyson Dixon is about to become the first British elite women's runner to cross the finish line.

Hot on her heels is Charlotte Purdue, but Dixon finds that extra burst with the finish line in sight. It's a PB for both runners - and there's huge emotion on Dixon's face as she crosses the line.

And a Borini celebration for good measure!

Here comes Mary Keitany now, cheers ringing from all side of the course.

She's so close to the finish line, she's somehow - where she has found the extra energy from, I just don't know - sped up again and she's heading towards the finish line. The women's only world record is about to fall...

    Steve Cram
BBC athletics commentator on BBC One

Mary Keitany for the past few years has been probably the world's best marathon runner. She just hasn't been able to win the women's game

She has picked it up here remarkably. She's won the London Marathon before, but not like this.

  11. Keitany eyes course recordpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 23 April 2017

This has been an incredible performance from Mary Keitany. She set such a quick pace to start with and now she's getting close to the finish line.

The women only course record here is 2:17:42. She's currently at 2:14 with less than a kilometer to go, and there's a final burst of energy as she realises how close she is to the finih line.

Tirunesh Dibaba keeps looking behind her, even now.

It was two contrasting starts but Keitany's last mile shows that she's tiring. She will definitely bne gaining momemtum and hope from the crowd.

At this stage in a marathon you're getting a lot of support but what you need to do is stay in the moment. You need to think about one foot in front of the other.

Tirunesh Dibaba has come to a stop. She briefly bends over, resting her hand on the side, before setting off again. She's being spurred on by the crowd along the Embankment and she's running again.

  16. Dixon heads up GB women's fieldpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 23 April 2017

    Women's elite race

From a British point of view, Alyson Dixon is still heading up the field on her search for a place at August's World Championships.

She's been chased down by her team-mate Charlotte Purdue and Tracy Barlow, who have been spurring each other on.

Mary Keitany meanwhile has reached the uphill section at Blackfriars, the last 5k. It looks punishing - and it's taking its toll on Tirunesh Dibaba who is seriously struggling with stomach cramps.

When you pass halfway you start feeling good.

By this point they’re feeding off each other. It’s starting to spread out a little bit now.

It could be easy to play mind games with Bekele. He's looking in difficulty but now it's staring to look as though he's getting himself out of that bad patch.
