It may be an unfamiliar name to most of you but it's Isaac Makwala of Botswana who has been the fastest in the world this year over 200m. By some way too, he ran a rapid 19.77 in Madrid last month.

That's the 15th fastest time ever over the distance and means that the 30-year-old has to be a strong contender for gold in London.

He's primarily a 400m runner to be honest and came fourth in that event in Beijing two years ago, as well as qualifying for the final tomorrow.

    He's up next.

That was very good from Daniel Talbot, he was almost having a chat with Wayde van Niekerk as they crossed the line.

Van Niekerk has in fact been given the win, not that it matters. They have both been given 20.16 seconds. The top three go through.

    Men's triple jump

Lots of athletes, 31 in fact, are about to get under way in the qualifying for the men's triple jump. The top 12 go through, and you're straight through with a jump of over 17m. That's 90% of a 10-pin bowling lane by the way. Pretty far.

Group A – America’s Christian Taylorcame close to breaking the world record of Jonathan Edwards when winning gold in Beijing two years ago, coming up just eight centimetres short. The double Olympic champion has only lost four times since July 2014. Compatriot Chris Benard is ranked third in the world this year. Britain’s Nathan Fox must improve on his season's best of 16.81 to progress.

Group BWill Claye is second only to Taylor in the world in 2017 and the American will aim to improve on two World Championships bronze medals.

  17. How far can you run in 9.58 seconds?published at 18:40 British Summer Time 7 August 2017

    Sam Bryant
    BBC Sport at London Stadium

9.58 seconds is the theme in Hero Village at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

There's a challenge to see how many metres you can run in that time (you go up against a cheetah, a bike and some chap called Usain). As you find your breath after that you can have a go at the timer challenge. Backs to the clock, how close can you stop the timer to the famous 9.58 mark? The best we've seen so far is 9.60.

In total there are over 20 activities for fans to try and there are people of all ages having a go - including a lot of competitive dads.

Well that was easy, Jereem Richards is handed an unhelpful draw in lane two and it means that he has to go out quick. After 100m or so he can look around and see a massive lead - he eases down but still wins in 20.05. Quick for the first round.

Kyree King and Rasheed Dwyer are also straight through.

Colin Jackson adds: "When he crossed the line his right shoe lace was undone. He looked nice and controlled though."
