Manuela Schar has set a course record!
She finishes first in a dominant performance of 48.44. Britain's Sammi Kinghorn is second in 52.48 in her first half-marathon.
Elite women's race
Mary Keitany is getting quicker and quicker. She's reached the eighth mile in four minutes 50 seconds and she's got a substantial lead over Vivian Cheruiyot.
We have our first result of the day!
Britain's Simon Lawson has claimed victory in 44.22 seconds. Canada's Brent Lakatos takes second place in 44.27 seconds, with Josh Cassidy third.

Elite men's race
It's Mo Farah who is in the front pack as the men cross into Gateshead. He's just holding back as Zane Robertson and Dathan Ritzenhein jostle for the lead.

Elite women's race
Paula Radcliffe
Women's marathon world record holder on BBC TV
Keitnay is through 10k in 31.35 - a 14 second gap between her and Cheruiyot. She has closed it a little bit and the fourth and fifth miles for Keitany did slow a little bit. She's picking it up when she can and she's maintaining the rhythm.
Elite women's race
Mary Keitany is way out in front at the minute. In fact, you can barely see her nearest opponent, Vivian Cheruiyot. She's about 70m behind Keitany.
You may not instantly recognise this fella, but he's entitled to a big smile this morning after son Jamie won the mixed doubles at the US Open yesterday.
Yes, it's Andy and Jamie's dad - William Murray.
We'll keep an eye on his progress around the course today...
Elite men's race
There they go! The elite men set off, followed by 40,000 racers, cheered on by Brendan Foster and the crowds lining the streets.
Elite men's race
Mo still had enough time for selfies, though, before he made his way to the start line.

Elite women's race
We're approaching the five mile stage, and Mary Keitany has managed to shake off Caroline Kipkuri. She's out in front now.
Elite men's race
Trying to spoil Farah's party in th men's race will be Feyisa Lilesa, the Olympic marathon silver medallist, and five-time American world champion Bernard Lagat.
Last year's champion Dathan Ritzenhein has returned to defend his crown and there's also competition from from New Zealand's Commonwealth bronze medallist Zane Robertson.
From a British point of view, there's European silver medallist Chris Thompson and Tsegai Tewelde, who represented Team GB in the marathon at Rio 2016.
Elite women's race
As expected, it's Mary Keitany, Vivian Cheruiyot and Caroline Kipkirui out in front.
Cheruiyot is actually being outpaced by Keitany and Kipkirui. Keitany, much like she did in the London Marathon, is trying to sprint ahead of Kipkirui but her opponent has stuck with her so far. They are way out in front, with Kipkirui hot on Keitany's heels.
Elite wheelchair race
In the women's wheelchair race, it's Manuela Schar who is out in the lead. She's gone through the 5k mark in ten minutes.
Britain's Sammi Kinghorn is in second after whizzing through the same mark in 11 minutes 51 seconds.
Elite men's race
Last but not least, the elite men's field will get going in Newcastle.
It's headed up by four-time Olympian, six-time world champion and three-time Great North Run winner, Mo Farah. Not a bad list of accomplishments, ey?
Farah is bidding for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Great North Run title - no-one has ever won the run in four consecutive years.
Benson Masya of Kenya claimed victory in Newcastle in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1996.
