You've got to be in it. You've got to put yourself in contention and Ben Pattison did that around the first lap and so he was just sitting there being patient, doing what we wanted to see.

I have to say I'm still a little bit speechless. He's 21 and hasn't been in this sort of calibre before but he kept his cool and he kept his form.

With a Commonwealth bronze achieved on his major championship debut in Birmingham last year, Ben Pattison has managed to battle his way to the final at his first World Championships.

If this happens to be a tactical final, just watch out for the 21-year-old's trademark deadly finish.

A medal would be a massive shock - but you just never know in these middle distance scraps.

Ben Pattison snuck through to this men's 800m final as one of the two fastest losers.

On paper the Commonwealth bronze medallist Pattison is probably not one of the main contenders - he is one of two of the eight finalists yet to go under one minutes 44 seconds - but it is a wide open event.

19-year-old Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi has been praised by the great David Rudisha, the world record holder of this distance, and is the fastest in the world this year.

Last year’s silver and bronze medallists Djamel Sedjati and Marco Arop have also looked strong.

It's the USA who suffer the first high-profile disaster of the evening after that messy changeover - bumping Italy up to the automatic qualification places to big cheers in one section of the crowd.
