That was the sloppiest US 4x400m relay I've seen in quite some time.

It looks like USA's Alexis Holmes has taken the baton too late after that crucial blue line...

Great Britain win.
USA come home in second but will they be allowed through? There are nervous faces.
They have won seven of the past eight golds in this event.

Have the USA just messed up that final exchange?!
There'll be an enquiry afterwards for sure...

It's looking very good indeed. I'm very happy that Great Britain and Northern Ireland are happy to exchange blows with the United States early on.
Women's 4x400m relay heats
It looks a matter of just bringing the baton home over the final leg. Great Britain lead from USA with a big, big gap behind.

Very good, strong first leg from Great Britain and Northern Ireland's Laviai Nielsen.

For the relay team I suggest the Bionic Man (Steve Austin) followed by the Bionic Woman (Jaime Sommers), Speedy Gonzales and Roadrunner. Beep beep!

Now can Great Britain, the bronze medallists last year, join the men in reaching tomorrow's 4x400m final?
Laviai Nielsen, Amber Anning, Nicole Yeargin, Yemi Mary John are the quartet.
The USA are the clear favourites in this heat.
Men's pole vault final
Armand Duplantis is still cruising through the pole vault final, by the way.
He makes it look so easy.

Jamaica do indeed win the first heat by a comfortable margin.
Femke Bol, who I feel like I have spent my entire week writing about, brings Netherlands home in third. Canada finish second.

I was very impressed with that run from Great Britain. To go sub three minutes is exceptional. I think they'll support each other and it was a great job.

Great Britain are in the second heat in the women's event. The first has just begun.
Again, it's the top three finishers in each heat plus two fastest losers.
Jamaica will be the favourites here.

Jamaica win it comfortably in the end with Italy and France coming through for second and third.
Kenya's Wyclife Kinyamal ties up horribly in the home straight, possibly pulling something in his leg, as they go from second to seventh.

There's nothing quite like some good old relay action to get the crowd going on a Saturday night.
The team aspect really gets those in the crowd involved as they root for their nation, and there's a wonderful variety of colours being proudly worn around the stadium, with flags being waved passionately as the athletes charge round the track.
Opposite me there's also a sea of yellow, where a big group of Swedish fans have positioned themselves perfectly beside the pole vault in the hope of seeing Armand Duplantis take gold this evening.
