    Williams v Smith

Liam Williams starts again with the jab, looking for a chink in Smith's guard.

Smith is struggling to get in range and avoid William's pneumatic left hand.

As the round goes on the Liverpudlian connects with a right hand, the cross working for him so far.

    Liam WIlliams v Liam Smith

Fair to say Liam Smith is not happy that he is not favourite for this fight.

"A lot of people are going to look silly when this fight is over," he said. "I'm confident on my behalf that this is not a 50-50 fight."

When even the bookies cannot decide on a likely winner, you know that the notion of a fight being 50/50 is more than just promoter hyperbole.

And so it is for the battle of the Liams in Manchester, as Liverpool's Smith and Welsh boxer Williams face off for what was scheduled to be the WBO interim world light-middleweight title.

Smith is a former world champion and part of one of British boxing's most successful families and arguably has an edge when it comes to big fight experience, having lost the title to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September.

Meanwhile, Williams is undefeated, highly-rated and highly-motivated. The stage is set. Or so we thought.

As ever in boxing, things can change and at Friday's weigh-in, they did.

Smith failed to make weight and did not return to the scales, meaning only Welsh fighter Williams can secure interim title status with a victory.

This fight became an interim world title opportunity because WBO light-middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will fight fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on 6 May.

That bout will take place at a catchweight between middle and super-middleweight - 164.5lbs - and so will not be for a world belt.

By going up in weight, Alvarez, who beat Liam Smith last September, will vacate the title, so Liam Williams could therefore become world champion.

If Alvarez does not vacate it then Williams would have to fight the Mexican.

    Plenty at stake for Williams.

  10. 'A tantalising prospect'published at 21:19 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Liam Smith v Liam Williams is a contest that has had British fight fans captivated for months, but it was within a whisker of being cancelled after weigh-in drama on Friday.

Liverpool’s Smith missed the weight for his proposed WBO interim light-middleweight world title fight, and opted not to return to the scales, later blaming confusion over how long he had to shift the rogue two lbs.

That led to confusion, with several hours passing before the WBO confirmed the contest could go ahead, with the interim world title status still in play for Welshman Williams.

However, for Smith, the glory of victory will have to suffice, as he suffers the consequences of failing to make championship weight.

Both fighters have hundreds, if not thousands of fans in attendance at the Manchester Arena, for a contest that is arguably tonight’s true main event, if you are a boxing nut.

Smith arguably has the greater track record, Williams the unblemished record, which all equals a tantalising prospect for fight fans.

Liverpool's Liam Smith failed to make the weight on Friday for his proposed WBO interim light-middleweight world title fight with Liam Williams.

The pair will still meet in Manchester tonight, but only Wales' Williams can now claim interim champion status with a victory.

England's Smith initially weighed in at 11st 1lb 15oz, almost 2lbs over the limit and elected not to be re-weighed.

He later apologised on Twitter adding: "This is the first time I have missed weight in eight years. The fight still goes ahead and believe me, my punishment in not being able to win the belt, is hurting enough."

Nicola Adams may be the name that's got us all excited tonight, but it's another phenomenal Brit that tops the bill at Manchester Arena.

Hometown fighter Terry Flanagan is looking to defend his title WBO world lightweight against Russia's Petr Petrov.

The 27-year-old is unbeaten in 32 fights, giving him the best unbeaten record compared to any other current world champion in Britain.

First up, though, is an all-British bout between Liam Smith and Liam Williams...
