World title challenger and Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell returned to the ring with a fifth round stoppage of Troy James

It was a good warm-up contest for the Hull lightweight as he prepares for a rematch with Yvan Mendy, who was the first man to beat Campbell in 2015, in a final eliminator for the WBC world title.

A spirited James was no match for Campbell's speed and accuracy as the former British title challenger was floored twice in the second round and the fourth before the referee halted proceedings in the fifth.

"My number one fight is Yvan Mendy, I have unfinished business there," said Campbell.

"I need to clean my record, it's a big fight and I want that."

Frenchman Mendy, 32, has 40 wins, four losses and one draw on his record while Campbell has only lost twice in 20 professional contests.

Belfast boxer James Tennyson climbed off the canvas to take the European and Commonwealth featherweight titles from Martin Ward with a sensational fifth round stoppage.

Tennyson hit the deck first as Ward unleashed a crunching body blow to force the Northern Irishman to his knees.

Both fighters traded heavy shots in the third before a left hook rocked back Ward in the fourth.

The stunning end came in the fifth where Tennyson found a second wind to charge Ward down and force referee Victor Loughlin to halt proceedings after a punishing barrage.

Croydon light-heavyweight Joshua Buatsi continued his impressive run in the pro ranks with a fourth stoppage in six fights.

Buatsi, 25, stopped 29-year-old Stephane Cuevas in the fifth of an eight round contest to hand the Frenchman his second loss in 13 fights.

A series of right hooks brought an end to proceedings after a slow start but the Rio 2016 bronze medallist is keen to be pushed forward.

"They're going to step me up and it's my job to to do the business," Buatsi said.

Heavyweight Joe Joyce picked up his fourth consecutive stoppage victory in the paid ranks as he halted Lenroy Thomas in two rounds to win the Commonwealth title.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist stunned Thomas from the start with a series of swings before he knocked the 33-year-old Jamaican down at the end of the first round.

Joyce, who was dressed in Mexican colours and walked to the ring wearing a sombrero to honour Cinco De Mayo, finally found the winning shot with a short left hook on the chin in the second to hand Thomas his fifth loss in a 28-fight career.

Joyce's Commonwealth title win in only his fourth professional fight breaks a record that is more than a century old by becoming the quickest man to pick up the belt.

Puerto Rico's Emmanuel Rodriguez won the vacant IBF bantamweight title by outclassing Paul Butler over 12 rounds with scorecards of 120-106, 120-106 and 118-108.

Butler, who held the same title briefly in 2014, could not win it back anyway after he failed to make weight on the scales yesterday.

The 29-year-old from Ellesmere Port was dropped twice in the opening round as it became clear it was a step too far against a fresher Rodriguez.

"The weight was a mistake on my behalf and it won't happen again. You live and learn," said Butler.

Rodriguez added: "I found it easier than I should have done, but a win's a win."

  10. The retirement plan...published at 21:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2018

    Haye v Bellew II

    Luke Reddy
BBC Sport at the O2 Arena in London

I’ve lost count of how many interviews Tony Bellew has done in the last year. Each of them tends to be frank, open and honest.

He’s now thinking about life after boxing. His partner Rachel wants him to quit now. He points though to all the poor pay days and why would he stop now that the big ones have finally arrived.

The Liverpudlian owns 10 terraced houses in his city now. He’s come a long way from the guy who grew up on Wavertree’s streets with dreams of playing for Everton.

Golf is now one of his favourite past times (though he says he’s terrible) and he has one eye on playing Sunday League again when the gloves are finished with.

Bellew says he wants the best over-35s team ever and has asked former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, Burton midfielder Neil Danns (one of his best mates) and Fleetwood boss Joey Barton to sign up.

In his own words, he just wants to goal hang and take the glory. Who knows, a glorious win tonight and that retirement plan may well come to the front of his mind.

  12. Things got heated...published at 21:09 British Summer Time 5 May 2018

We said they didn't like each other, and things got a bit feisty at the final press conference with Bellew shoving Haye, as you can see in the video below.

Good evening and welcome along to BBC Sport's live text commentary on a big night of heavyweight boxing as Tony Bellew fights David Haye at the O2 Arena in London.

  14. Repeat or revengepublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 5 May 2018

It was one of the shock results of 2017.

Tony Bellew, fighting in a heavyweight contest for the first time in his career, defeated former heavyweight champion David Haye, with an 11th-round victory back in March 2017.

Haye took the opening rounds but the fight turned in the sixth when the Londoner tore his Achilles, and Bellew took advantage of that by going on to record a huge upset, with Haye's corner throwing the towel in.

But that has not stopped the clamour for a repeat. Both men, just as they did last year, have traded insults and this is not just fight hype, they just can't stand each other.

Tonight, they do it all again. Repeat or revenge. It's going to be lively.
