Adams beats Valle Frias with first-round stoppage

This was probably the hardest part of the night for Nicola Adams as she ducked to slip between the ropes.

Whether it be two-minute rounds, three minute rounds or whatever, that's an impressive win.

  7. 46 seconds too long?published at 20:41 British Summer Time 19 May 2018

Reports from ringside say the fight actually lasted two minutes 46 seconds, 47 seconds more than the official time given.

A bad night for the timekeeper.

  8. Postpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 19 May 2018

One minute 59 seconds is the official time. Apparently.

  9. Adams wins with first round stoppagepublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 19 May 2018

It was meant to be a two-minute round. Valle Frias would have wished it had been. The round goes on longer than two minutes, Adams, as she had done throughout the opening round continues her sustained attack.

Valle Frias is knocked down and the referee waves the fight off. Controversy, a bit of a timing shambles, but Adams was superb. Job done. On to much bigger things now.

It was meant to be a two-minute round. Maybe no-one told the officials. The round goes much longer than it should have done.

Nicola Adams will be a heavy, heavy favourite tonight.

But she will contest 10 rounds as a professional for the first time having only amassed 10 rounds in total across her three pro bouts so far.

Soledad del Valle Frias by contrast has had a mixed career over six years as a pro. She has competed for a world title three times and lost all three.

Nicola Adams will look to not only kick her world title ambitions on here but will hope put a testing spell behind her.

The Leeds fighter has recently split with her partner, has seen her coach Virgil Hunter face some health issues and continues to care for her mother, who has cancer.

"It's hard to focus on anything when your mum is sick and it means absolutely everything to me that she will be there ringside on Saturday," Adams told BBC Sport.

"I will be wearing a breast cancer awareness badge on my shorts to help raise awareness and yes, I just want to do everything I can for her, basically.

"My mum was ringside when I won both of my gold medals and I'm used to her being there, so it means a lot she will be on Saturday too.

"She's having treatment at the moment and it is all going well. It has not been ideal for preparation though."

  17. 'Adams must find momentum'published at 20:32 British Summer Time 19 May 2018

    Adams v Valle Frias

    Mike Costello
BBC Sport boxing correspondent at Elland Road

"Adams' professional career has stuttered. My feeling is one that I've had for six years and that is she should have turned professional after London 2012. She had such momentum as the first ever female Olympic champion.

"She is trying to cause the wave, not ride the wave. Boxers like her, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields are flying the flag for women's boxing but it might well be the benefits of what they are doing now will be felt by female boxers in 10 years time."

"In the second Olympics Adams doesn't break sweat. I'm not saying it was easy, it never is, but she was so dominant and good.

"She has to box 10 rounds for the first time tonight. The other champions at her weight have done that 10 or 12 times or more. The idea that she can pick up four world titles is a tough ask. They are not giving world titles away and she has a really hard 18 months in front of her."

Boxing can be a gritty business. For all the glamour of big stadium nights, there's those thousands of fighters grafting away on small-hall shows for their opportunity.

A late starter in the paid ranks due to her glittering amateur career, Nicola Adams made headlines this week for saying she expected to retire from boxing within two years.

However, Adams told BBC Sport that the 24 month period is very much a personal target and that she will not rule out fighting on to try and win world titles at multiple weights.

"I want to do the most I possibly can," she said.

"I am more scrutinised in what I say now, but when I said that I wanted to be a multiple weight world champion I meant it, but I've just got to do it a belt at a time.

"It's a target for me, it's just my aim and I do think I can do it all in two years. It's not necessarily that I want to retire at that point; I just think it's doable and I have the capability to do that. If it takes longer, who knows… but I think I can do it in two years."
