  3. Joshua outclasses Pulev in knockout win - read the reportpublished at 00:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua mixed power and patience as he knocked out Kubrat Pulev to bolster hopes that a historic fight against Tyson Fury could soon be a reality.

The British heavyweight drilled his mandatory challenger to the canvas twice in round three in a chaotic flurry that saw Pulev smiling while under attack and turning his back when under fire, only to somehow make the bell.

Joshua, perhaps fatigued by the chaos, stepped off the gas and allowed Pulev to at least offer some mild threat, but a barrage of uppercuts in the ninth dropped Pulev and a straight right hand wiped him out seconds later.

The 1,000 fans granted access to Wembley Arena saw a blend of the boxing skills and crushing punches that have helped build Joshua into the attraction he is.

Moments after the fans roared at the prospect of the IBF, WBA and WBO champion facing WBC champion Fury next, Joshua said: "I started this game in 2013, gathered the belts.

"Whoever has the belts I want to compete with. If that is Tyson Fury, let it be Tyson Fury."

Fury quickly took to social media and said: "There you go everyone. Anthony Joshua got asked if he wanted the fight and he went round the bushes. I want the fight. I want the fight next. I will knock him out inside three rounds. I can't wait to knock him out."

Francesca Gunn: I think AJ was ultimately testing himself. We saw with Klitschko he went all out and got the knockdowns, but then tired himself out & struggled. So I think this was him seeing how much he can put forward but how long he can go if he needs do. So he was playing smart.

  5. Hughie Fury survives bad cut to beat Wachpublished at 00:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

    Earlier tonight...

Hughie Fury contended with an ugly cut to outclass Poland's Mariusz Wach in a unanimous points win at Wembley Arena.

British heavyweight Fury, 26, carried the fight to his rival but was badly cut around his left eye in a clash of heads early on in the 10 round contest.

Instruction from his father and trainer Peter Fury to box rather than fight saw him amend his approach and minimise the risk of further damage to the cut. And the judges gave him a wide decision 100-90 100-90 99-91 on the cards.

Fury - cousin of WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury - was badly cut over his left eye against Bulgaria's Kubrat Pulev in 2018.

The damage inflicted by Wach's head was checked over by the ringside doctor but Fury was able to remain poised and boxed smartly throughout to land his 25th win from 28 fights.

  7. Fight for all the marbles?published at 00:31 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Anthony Joshua holds the IBO, WBA, IBF and WBO World Heavyweight titles, Tyson Fury has the WBC crown.

There has not been an undisputed heavyweight champion of the world since Lennox Lewis in late 1999-early 2000.

Next year that could be how we describe either Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury. Let's hope so.

Chuksnkeze: I have never seen AJ this mobile. He was smart and intelligent in the ring. Good Job AJ

Dan Wesley: From the way Joshua fought, it's difficult to say he was interested. It could look like nonchalance but I think it's more than that.

  10. 'Joshua showed he is a champion'published at 00:22 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

    Dillian Whyte
Former British heavyweight champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

Joshua did what he had to do, which was worry about winning today, not worry about what he will do tomorrow. He looked good.

He boxed well, he moved well, he punched well. Obviously, Pulev was not much of a threat, but Joshua showed he is a champion.

  11. 'Shots won't be landing on Tyson so clean'published at 00:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2020

Peter Fury (Tyson's uncle) speaking to Sky on Joshua's victory: "I thought it was a great finish. When he puts his shots together, they are explosive. He let Pulev back in the fight for some reason. It was a calculated performance and Pulev is a very good fighter,

On Tyson Fury v Joshua: "It would be a great fight if it happens. They are both up for it. They've got different styles though - Tyson is a totally different ball game to Pulev.

"Them shots won't be landing on Tyson so clean. If AJ can land, anyone's going down, but the same for Tyson, he's a puncher as well. It works both ways.

"Joshua is a little bit hesitant in there. He doesn't let his hands go too much. For me, he's too upright, he's got no lateral movement, and Tyson's got that in abundance. He's very, very awkward."

F: Pleased AJ won. But he should’ve had it wrapped up sooner especially after the 3rd round. I’d be worried about him against Tyson Fury. Let’s see what 2021 brings.

  17. 'He will be happy with this performance'published at 23:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

    Mike Costello
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think he will accept that performance tonight, given he has been away from the ring for a year and given the stage of his career he is at and the kind of jeopardy we had spoken about going into the fight.

That was added pressure that we saw escalate at the weigh-in. He will be happy with this performance. Of course there is plenty to work on when he goes away from here. I'm struck by the comment that he seems to be caught between styles.

That may not have been part of the plan but of the evolving of a boxer who starts to understands what he is and what he wants to be.
