Saunders' performances are not worthy for a shot at Canelo. He's been inactive too. To be thrown in a fight like that, he needs some better performances under his belt.

But he may be in the running now.

Eubank Jr would be a great fight to watch. He's a huge character, engaging for fans and it would be exciting.

Some 24 hours ago Gennady Golovkin won again. You can imagine the build-up to the third fight. The first was a draw, the second went narrowly to Alvarez. There's so much to talk about going forward here for a man who is 30 years of age but has spent half his life in a ring.

  9. Billy Joe Saunders next for Alvarez?published at 06:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

Hearn reckons Alvarez, who usually fights twice a year, will take on Britain's WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders next, before a third fight with Gennady Golovkin.

"He loves to take on the best, he’s a hell of a fighter," said Hearn.

"Billy Joe Saunders and then GGG in that order

"I think he’s going to want to pick up the other belts in the division

"I think he’ll go for Billy next."

Smith's Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn

Promoter Eddie Hearn spoke to 5 Live after the fight: "You just saw the pound-for-pound king. Callum Smith is so tough. He gave a great interview there. I think he detached his bicep in the second or third round but it didn’t really matter.

It was a masterclass from Canelo. I just left Smith’s changing room and everyone is talking about Alvarez. He’s just so good.

I’m proud of Callum. He never stopped throwing but he came up against the best fighter on the planet."

I'd like to see Canelo in with Billy Joe Saunders. Failing that I'd like to see Chris Eubank Jr.

I thought there was something in Smith's sentiment there when he talked about going away and thinking about next year that he was actually thinking about if he will return to the ring.

When fighters finish with Canelo they say how good he was at closing the space. That's what happens when you fight him. You discover things about yourself you didn't know and things about him you didn't recognise before you got in the ring.

Smith has been broken. He needs quiet time with his family and then look at that move in weight.

Canelo took away Smith's height, reach and confidence.

  15. 'He was the better man'published at 05:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez beats Smith

Callum Smith speaks to DAZN: "I'm devastated. I came here to win. No excuses he was very good.

"Maybe I've been on the weight too long. I don't feel as dominant late on in fights. It could have been a better version of me tonight. He performed and was the better man.

"He is smart to be honest. He is clever. He closes ground, sets traps and before you know it he's closed the ground up. I maybe let him close the ground up too easily."

Will you move up in weight? "I need to go and spend time with family and decide what is next for me next year."

  16. 'I will go for more'published at 05:38 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez beats Smith

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez explains he knew he could take Callum Smith's power "from the first round"

"I feel great at 168lbs," he adds. "I don't want to fight the scales and after 13 months you can see what I can do.

"This is one of the best nights I have had. One of the greatest nights. I will go for more.

"I want all the belts, it doesn't matter who has them."

Alvarez adds he would take a third fight with Gennady Golovkin if he wants it, adding: "I don't run from anybody. I have fought against the best. I have shown the world I fight the best."

  17. 'I did a great job'published at 05:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

"I did a great job after 13 months out. Smith is a great fighter but I did a great job," Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez tells DAZN.

    Steve Bunce

A real world champion. I was looking through some of the men he has beaten moving up and down weights. The kid has nothing to prove.

This fight was always a really dangerous, bold and brave one to take. That may sound silly now. I maintain this was dangerous for Canelo.

What we have seen is he has nullified an exceptional champion. He has taken away Callum's confidence, ability to land jabs and made him doubt what he wanted to do.

    That is class.
