He is a fully-flegded super-middleweight. He's beaten the number one in the division convincingly. He bullied him, marched him down and used his punch power to control the entire fight.

I see nothing but a wide points win for him.

That's 12 rounds of a brilliant performance from Canelo.

  3. Round 12published at 05:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

    Into the final round.

Let's hope Callum Smith sees the final bell as he deserves to stay in there having been so game. He can't win now, only a shot from the Gods can save him.

A right hook lands from Canelo with two minutes on the clock. A one-two from the Mexican, a left hook, a right hook, all of them heavy. The pair smile at one another respectfully.

Wherever Smith moves he is stalked. It's been like that since the opening bell. He'll be looking over his shoulder for Canelo over Christmas, such has been the consistency of the pressure.

A minute to go, this is going to be 11-1 on rounds or thereabouts in my view. Some will question why Smith didn't show a bit more but "let's have it right" as Steve Bunce would say, Canelo has been wonderfully impressive.

The bell sounds. Strike up the Mexican band folks.

Alvarez in full control. He's miles ahead on the cards now. Smith needs a stoppage. He needs to really pull it out of the bag in this final round.

This picture kind of sums up what we've seen. Smith backed up and taking hard, spiteful shots.

  6. Round 11published at 05:24 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

According to ringside stats, Canelo landed 30 shots to Smith's six in round 10.

The 11th starts slowly but with a minute to go a hard right hand to his face sends him backwards. A low blow by Canelo goes unseen and somehow Smith is still stood there, throwing punches that - in all honesty - Canelo has no respect for.

We have one round left folks and the fat lady is signing. She's singing in Mexican.

This has become a beatdown now. Alvarez is marching him down and there's nothing coming back from Smith. There was concern from his corner.

  8. In the corner...published at 05:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

"You're sitting on the ropes and not countering," trainer Joe Gallagher tells Callum Smith.

Gallagher's voice is filled with concern.

  9. Round 10published at 05:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

A right to the body, a right uppercut and another body shot from Canelo. Three shots in the blink of an eye.

Callum Smith is taking them but that's about it. The Liverpudlian - like 53 men before him - is coming up short.

Canelo beginning to load the body shots up even more now, he's sensing he can close the show.

The noises he's making as he throws tell you just how much pop he's putting into these. They could demolish a family home.

  10. Round 10published at 05:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

US broadcasters are calling this "a bad beating".

It's getting there. Of that there is no doubt.

Smith can’t keep him off. As soon as his back hits the ropes, Alvarez has all the time in the world. That was a big round for Alvarez.

  12. 'Canelo reading everything'published at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Steve Bunce
Boxing pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live

He's fighting his heart out here Callum, just to lose. He's trying everything but Canelo is reading everything.

  13. 'I'll give you one more round'published at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

Callum Smith is clinging on. He took punishment in that ninth round and a solid body shot got him late on. His nose is not in good shape at all.

    Something colossal is needed now.

Joe Gallagher tells him: "I'm going to give you one more round".

    Smith replies: "No it's fine."

  14. Round nine...published at 05:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

It looks like Callum Smith's nose is bloodied. Body shots find is abdomen and as he steps away from the ropes he gets tagged by a wild right hand.

A HUGE RIGHT HAND from Canelo and Smith slumps into the ropes. He's feeling this now. The consistent pressure and work is beginning to break him.

He finds his feet again but this is a bad, bad place to be. One of the worst in boxing...

  15. Smith's left hand has gonepublished at 05:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

We hear from Smith's corner inbetween rounds where he tells his trainer that his left hand or arm has 'gone'.

  16. Round eightpublished at 05:12 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

It is easy to be critical of Smith but Canelo is compact, brave and powerful. It's hard to find a way to even change his flow.

A solid right hand from Smith gets to Canelo on his way in. Does it offer enough to force him back? Not a chance. Here he comes again, launching an uppercut which is blocked but packed enough power to underline his defiance.

A two-shot combination from Smith finds the target though moments for the bell and that may be enough for him to pinch a round there. He needs a stoppage now though, of that there is no question.

Let's be honest here, Smith needs to go for it now.

  19. 'More authority from Smith'published at 05:08 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    George Groves
Former super-middleweight world champion George Groves on BBC Radio 5 Live

A good round for Smith again. It feels like there's a bit more authority to his shots. But Canelo is able to march him towards the ropes. As soon as his back hits the ropes, it's a different fight and that's where Canelo wants to keep him. Smith needs to be in the middle of the ring.

  20. Round sevenpublished at 05:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2020

    Alvarez v Smith

A sign of the cross from Smith as he steps away from his stool for the seventh.

He steps in with an uppercut but it's a fraction off target and finds the glove only.

The Smith jab is pawing rather than punishing so far tonight. He attacks the body with a right hand but Canelo takes it and here comes the Mexican, forcing the champion back to the ropes and unloading a body shot.

Fine body shots on the counter by Canelo. Smith threw and by the time his punch got there he'd taken one to his abdomen.

    One.

    Way.

    Traffic.
