Luis Alberto Lopez beats Josh Warrington

What a remarkable end to a dramatic day of sport.

Luis Alberto Lopez has caused a major upset to take the IBF featherweight title, and leave Josh Warrington with major questions as to what paths he takes next.

As mentioned below, highlights will be available on the BBC Sport website from 09:00 GMT, and you can read our in-depth report from an incredible night.

    Thank you for joining us.

Eddie Hearn speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: "I thought it was a fight of two halves. Lopez built up a lead and then tried to coast through the fight. Josh's pressure won him the back end of the fight, I had him winning the last three of four rounds.

"I thought Josh could have nicked it but it wasn't to be. It was a high-level fight. Lopez is a good fighter, he's tricky and there won't be many queuing up to face him.

"I don't think there was a clear winner either way. It depends what you like, Lopez was flashy early but Warrington had the aggression later on."

On what's next for Warrington: "There's a couple of things Josh wants to do, he can't unify now but he can still go to the States and I'd still like to deliver that.

"Maybe still a Leigh Wood fight at the City Ground, it looks like he's going to fight Mauricio Lara and if Leigh comes through that then why not take on Josh?"

  3. Wood refuses to rule out Warrington fightpublished at 00:11 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Leigh Wood was on the DAZN broadcast this evening watching his featherweight rival in action.

The WBA 'Regular' champion did not rule out a future fight with Josh Warrington, but says the 'Leeds Warrior' must still have the "burning desire" to keep going.

On if fighting Warrington in the future is ruled out for now: “Maybe [yes for] the next fight, but he didn’t get blown away. It was a close fight. I thought he deserved to win. Based on the fact he’s the champion. The rounds he won, he won clearer.”

On if Warrington should continue fighting: “If he wants to continue fighting, Eddie Hearn will get him back in there and he will get back to winning ways. I’d give him a chance, a shot [in the future] because I know that fight will tick off a box for me.”

“If he wants to fight, he needs that burning desire, so he needs to talk to his family.”

    Well worth watching back.

  5. 'I could have done more'published at 00:05 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Luis Alberto Lopez beats Josh Warrington

Josh Warrington tells BBC Radio 5 Live Sport Extra: "I understand the fight was close in stages. He started off like a train and kept coming forward.

"I was conscious of my jaw in the first few rounds.

"I kept working inside and could hear him wincing to the body constantly. He made a meal of it when I hit his leg and I was surprised Bob Williams let him have 20 seconds.

"In hindsight I look back and think I could have done more.

"He kept saying 'vamos, vamos, vamos' to try and get under my skin, but everytime we got in close he just wanted to hold. Another referee might have penalised him."

Those last two rounds from Warrington were incredible, there were more than a few moments in which he looked to be about to knock Lopez out.

If this is Warrington's final bout in Leeds, as has been speculated on previously, then he has not left quietly.

But he leaves, for the second time, a beaten champion.

Luis Alberto Lopez beats Josh Warrington

Josh Warrington tells DAZN: "It's a 12-round fight, I started slow, he was giddy but after four and five he didn't want to work inside.

"There's a stigma about me being a dirty fighter but that's not fair.

"I knew on the inside I could hurt him to the body, the body shots were ripping him but he kept holding. At some stages it was close but wild punches that hit my gloves don't count.

"A big thank you to everyone who made the noise throughout.

"I had aspirations of doing other things, I wanted to go to the States and I still want to do that. Maybe unifying is a step too far but I think I can still fight one of the other champions."

We'll be seeing a lot more from Lopez in title bouts. He looked totally at home tonight, not intimidated.

In those early rounds, I do think Warrington played into his opponent's plans with frenetic attack. The atmosphere, the pressure of boxing to his Leeds home crowd, effected him more than Lopez.

By the time Warrington settled and started boxing clever, it was too late.

IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez tells DAZN: "I'm really happy at the moment. It has been a long period of preparation, this is my moment. I'm delighted to be world champion.

"I had to respect him coming into his city. I knew he was a dirty fighter but he surprised me, the referee didn't do his work.

"You have to be conscious and look after boxers to make sure they don't suffer any accidents."

Eddie Hearn now speaking (of course) saying Warrington's fight in the US can still happen.

    I wouldn't be so sure.

"I'm absolutely devastated," says Warrington, before thanking the crowd.

He's asked if he has energy to go again. He's non-committal.

Lopez, via translation, is calling Warrington a dirty fighter, saying he was being hit in the legs and glutes. He criticises the referee too.

He won't be leaving Leeds with many friends.

But, most importantly, he is leaving with the belt.

Lopez is giving his post-match interview in Spanish. He's being booed by the crowd, which is a shame but not greatly surprising.

Not a good night to be an English football or boxing fan.

This was not in the career plan.

Lopez is on his back in the ring, the Mexican flag on his shoulders. He went toe to toe with Warrington early on, and edged the early rounds.

Warrington came back like a steam train, but he had too much ground to make up in the last few rounds.

Adam Height and Mike Fitzgerald scored that 115-113 to Lopez.
