Leigh Wood's reign as WBA featherweight champion is over after the Briton lost in devastating fashion to hard-hitting Mauricio Lara in Nottingham.

The 34-year-old seemed to be in control of the fight and was landing with ease through rounds three to six, before Lara unleased a sensational left hook in the seventh.

Wood hit the canvas and bravely got back to his feet.

But clearly hurt, his trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel.

Lara beats Wood to become WBA featherweight champion via seventh-round stoppage

Leigh Wood, speaking to DAZN, is asked if he wants a rematch and says 'absolutely'. He adds: "I'm a fighter. Congratulations to Mauricio Lara, great fighter. I made a mistake and paid for it. Massive thank you to everyone, I appreciate you coming out for me and I will be back."

Promoter Eddie Hearn says: "Firstly well done to Leigh Wood for taking a fight like this, everyone knows how dangerous Mauricio Lara is.

"Leigh Wood has a rematch clause, I believe he wants to exercise this rematch. I thought he was cruising that fight, won four rounds on a spin, but Mauricio Lara came with a left hook from the heavens."

Mauricio Lara, speaking to DAZN, says: "Thank you to the people here, the reception has been very good.

"To become a world champion is a dream I've had since being eight years of age. Leigh Wood is a great champion, he hits very hard, he's an intelligent boxer.

"I'm just really glad tonight. To be honest they [the body shots] didn't hurt me, I felt them but I got into the fight and showed what I could do.

"Of course I would like that trilogy [with Josh Warrington]. I want as many belts as possible, but it's up to Eddie Hearn to make that decision.

"It means a great deal for me to have this belt around my waist. The people in my team, my father, I will take this victory back to my wife and my daughter."

    And the new...

Mauricio Lara is lifted up on someone's shoulders and is paraded around the ring.

What a left hook from Lara to finish it.

The Mexican is the new world champion and could be set for a third fight with Josh Warrington next.

Lara stopped Warrington in the ninth round back in February 2021 at an empty Wembley Arena because of Covid-19 and the rematch came to a premature ending at Headingley in Leeds after an accidental head clash in the second left Lara with a bad cut.

    Round 7

Lara has been restricted to single counter punches in the early stages of the seventh as the punishment he has taken over the last 10 minutes looks to have taken a great deal of energy from the Lara tank.
