  3. 'A fight we need to settle'published at 23:32 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Catterall beats Linares by unanimous decision

Jack Catterall speaking to 5 live: “Listen, he went to Vegas, came over here, the full team. We knew he was going to bring it tonight.

"I’m my biggest critic, I probably could have done more tonight but the respect was there and it was valuable to get 12 rounds with a legend.

“He got into his rhythm, I hurt him in the middle rounds but he came back. He’s been in the sport for 30 years. He’s been the 12-round distance more than I’ve had fights so he knows how to get through a fight.

“I felt my timing was good tonight and he fell short a lot on his punches. I probably put too much pressure on myself. I was headlining tonight in Liverpool. I probably gave him too much respect but listen, lesson learned.

“Of course I would like that fight [Josh Taylor]. We need it to happen. All this week people are still talking about it like it was my last fight, and I’ve fought since then [Darragh Foley]. It’s a fight we need to settle."

"I don’t care if I lose or not, I care how I lose. I had three stupid losses but to lose to this guy I feel happy. I lost to a champion, the future generation.

"I feel this is my town, I love the people here. I hope in the future I can be here, but not fighting, maybe a promotor or something like that. I love England. I don't need to fight any more. I'm super happy with this fight."

"Keep trusting god and keep working hard. I had nine amateur fights and turned pro and guess what, I trusted god and I came good.

"When I was young I had low self-esteem but I started to believe in the ability I had. I had some niggles and injuries coming into this fight but I came through.

"Everyone fails at life, we just happen to do it in front of the whole world. You can always bounce back.

"You'll have to speak with Mick Hennessey and Ben Shalom. I want to take a break and relax."

    Lawal v Chamberlain

Chamberlain is certainly pulling the right hand. He backs Lawal onto the ropes and fires off some hooks, but there doesn't seem to be much sting in them.

Lawal is struggling to find success. So far his game plan hasn't worked. He's struggled to cope with Chamberlain's speed.

The opening he hoped for has not presented itself, can he produce a Hail Mary in the final round?

He misses big right at the end of this round and jeers ring out in York Hall.

Crowd has gone a bit quiet at the York Hall. You can hear Chamberlain's corner shouting encourgaements at him but he comes back to the corner with a bombshell.

He says his right bicep is "torn". How could that affect him in these final two rounds?

    Catterall v Linares

    Steve Bunce
Boxing expert on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

At the end of that fifth round I thought we saw what I'd expected to see and Jack would break Linares in the later rounds. Quite the reverse happened.

Linares in the last rounds found his range, and I thought he was superb. He didn't win it, but I thought he was superb.

Linares is happy, look at him. His stock has risen, bizarrely.

  20. Round ninepublished at 23:03 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    Lawal v Chamberlain

Both fighters are digging deep here. Chamberlain steps on the gas every now and then when he needs to. While Lawal is still desperately trying to find a big punch.

I say desperate, he doesn't look desperate at all, but surely he knows the rounds are slipping away?
