Race control flash the message that Q2 will get under way at 15:58 BST. Does this mean we have a decision on Ollie Bearman's final lap?

  2. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time

Haas driver Oliver Bearman is staying put in the car, waiting to hear whether or not he'll progress to Q2 in place of Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto.

  3. Bearman lap under reviewpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time

Oliver Bearman is asking questions about his lap. The Briton thinks he crossed the line before the red flag was shown, which would mean he had a chance of making it through to Q2. Haas have raised the issue and now his final timed lap is under review.

  4. 'McLarens didn't manage to maximise what the car was capable of'published at 15:47 British Summer Time

Even though the two McLarens have sailed through and quite comfortable getting into the next session, they weren't comfortable in their laps and they didn't manage to maximise what the car was capable of.

  5. Q2 start delayedpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time

Santa! Honoured to have you with us today.

It was a scruffy lap for Nico Hulkenberg as he tried to save himself before the red flag. The German waves goodbye at this stage of qualifying, as his rookie team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto makes it through.

The start of Q2 is delayed, so make yourselves a drink if you want one.

  7. red flag

Postpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time

Is that one mark against Franco Colapinto's name? He's only got five races to nab that Alpine seat as his and he's looking at a potential penalty for tomorrow's race. The TV cameras have already caught Jack Doohan walking through the paddock.

What's happening with Fernando Alonso? He's third fastest and for an Aston Martin to be anywhere near those sort of heights in the times is extremely unusual.

[On Franco Colapinto's crash]: It's such a brutal introduction to this sport, sometimes we see young drivers and the pressure is so high.

It feels like they don't get much time to deliver something that really sets up the rest of their career.

  11. red flag

Colapinto crashespublished at 15:36 British Summer Time

Franco Colapinto says sorry to his engineer after that heavy smash. He went front wing first into the barrier after running on to the grass and spinning around in the Alpine.

    That's Q1 over with.

  12. red flag

Red flagpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time

Franco Colapinto has crashed! The new Alpine driver has dropped it at the exit of Tamburello.

Thankfully, like Yuki Tsunoda, Colapinto is climbing safely out of the car, which is in a bad way stuck in the gravel.

That was a really good lap from Max Verstappen. The lap times from the two McLarens look close but might not be able to match that.

  15. Gasly in P5published at 15:29 British Summer Time

I put my 50p on Pierre Gasly making the pole shootout yesterday and the Alpine is coming good so far. He's fifth on the timesheets after the first runs of Q1, sandwiched between the Mercedes of George Russell and the McLaren of Lando Norris.

Norris actually had a snap of oversteer on his lap, resulting in sixth spot on the board.

I've not seen an accident that big for quite some time, landing upside down is an illustration of how important the halo head protection is in F1. Yuki Tsunoda is very lucky and seems OK walking off the track there.

  17. Postpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time

Fernando Alonso goes quickest in his upgraded Aston Martin but he's pushed down almost immediately by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen - also carrying a few updates in Imola.

Oscar Piastri slips into P2, over three tenths away from Verstappen's time, and Lando Norris can only manage sixth on his first run.

  18. Team radio - Colapinto to Alpinepublished at 15:25 British Summer Time

Colapinto: "I thought it was a release."

    Engineer: "That wasn't clear, sorry."

  19. Postpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time

There are seven drivers without a time on the board with seven minutes left of this Q1 session, including Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.

  20. Postpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time

The threat of a penalty hasn't affected Franco Colapinto too much, though, as he goes third fastest in the Alpine with a 1:16.256 on his C6 softs.
