Rejoice if you're a lover of corner names instead of just numbers, as Imola's Tamburello, Villeneuve, Tosa, Piratella, Acque Minerali, Variante Alta and Rivazza gives that nostalgia feel to a race weekend.

What's you favourite one to say out loud? Mine's Variante Alta.

Lando Norris is quickest so far but the McLaren driver leaving a plume of dust behind him as he runs wide and scrambles over the gravel. Lewis Hamilton does the same in the Ferrari a few moments later, telling his pit wall to check the floor.

  2. 'Aston Martin looking good'published at 12:25 British Summer Time

That Aston Martin in Fernando Alonso's hands is looking good on the hard tyre and has gone ninth in the soft tyre run, maybe those upgrades are the daylight at the end of tunnel for Aston Martin.

  3. Team radio - Tsunodapublished at 12:23 British Summer Time

    "Absolutely zero pace."

  4. Antonelli up to P4published at 12:22 British Summer Time

This has been a quiet weekend so far for home driver Kimi Antonelli. The Italian teenager has his family, friends and schoolmates cheering him on in Imola but after Friday's running he said he was still searching for a bit more pace out of the Mercedes.

His opening hot lap on the softs today lifts him up into the top five in fourth spot, half a second away from Lando Norris' quickest time.

  5. 'Verstappen looks like he's on it'published at 12:21 British Summer Time

Kimi Antonelli didn't put his lap together on the qualifying sim yesterday, but his race simulation was strong. It's interesting, McLaren's race simulation was strong as you'd expect and Charles Leclerc was quick and Antonelli wasn't far behind him. Max Verstappen was struggling, but it looks like he's on it from today, they've must've changed that car overnight and turned that engine up.

Lando Norris has perhaps worked it a bit more cleverly there, not going too mad on the first sector.

He's kept the tyres up and it's helped him go faster.

  7. Norris goes quickestpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time

Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen are roughing it on the gravel on their soft attempts but Lando Norris puts down a clean lap, which his C6 tyres thank him for, to go top of the timesheets with a 1:14.897.

  8. 'Quick and tidy lap from Verstappen'published at 12:17 British Summer Time

    Marc Priestley

Max Verstappen has done a quick and tidy lap, it seems like things have definitely improved for Verstappen and Red Bull overnight.

Things are looking like they are coming together when it matters, which is so often the case for Red Bull on a Saturday.

Both the Mercedes drivers are on the ragged edge but it doesn't seem like the cars are perfectly under their control at this point.

"The ride is definitely a bit worse today," says George Russell, as he kicks up a bit of dust on his latest lap on the soft compound. More qualifying preparation is taking place over at Red Bull and McLaren, with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris also aiming to hit that one-lap pace to claim pole today.

  11. 'It's about getting to the front'published at 12:13 British Summer Time

    Marc Priestley
Former F1 mechanic on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

With it being so difficult to overtake, it may be that there is a slight shift in philosophy.

It really is just about getting to the front, if someone like Max Verstappen, George Russell or Charles Leclerc can stick it on pole, they might have a very good chance at holding those McLarens back even though they might be faster in the race.

Charles Leclerc is in flight as his Ferrari clatters the kerb, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton finishes a scrappy lap and is down in ninth place. The Friday issues don't seem to have been ironed out just yet at Scuderia, so is there a possibility either Leclerc or Hamilton could struggle to make Q3 today?

At the end of the tight pit lane, Isack Hadjar is preparing for a practice start but he fails to spot the Williams of Carlos Sainz making his exit. The Racing Bulls rookie says sorry and admits he didn't the Spaniard coming.

I think it was at Tamburello [Lawson's spin], the same corner Isack Hadjar crashed at the end of FP2. It looks like both the Racing Bull car and the driver aren't having that corner at the moment

  16. 'Track getting a little quicker'published at 12:04 British Summer Time

    Ben Edwards

Every time the cars are going round the track it's looking like it's cleaning up a bit more and getting a little quicker.

  17. Verstappen now on toppublished at 12:02 British Summer Time

It didn't last long for Isack Hadjar being at the top of the timesheets but hopefully that's a positive sign the Racing Bulls rookie can make a bid for Q3 this afternoon.

Max Verstappen is now fastest on the mediums with a 1:15.130, just ahead of the McLaren of Lando Norris and Hadjar in third.

The other Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson has suffered a spin at the first chicane. The New Zealander slides across the gravel and flat-spots his medium tyres, so he has to limp back to the pits for some attention.

As Andrew mentions, traffic is a thorn in every team and driver's side at Imola. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is flying round in his Aston Martin but when he comes across one of the Ferraris at the end of the lap, he makes his feelings known on the team radio...

  20. 'There will be traffic jams'published at 11:58 British Summer Time

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

Alex Albon was saying when the track is less than a certain amount of distance, about 5km, there's not enough space over an entire lap for all the cars on the circuit at the gaps they want between each other to run optimum performance. There will be traffic jams and some controversy as a result.
