  3. 'I think that third position is where we should be' - Verstappenpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 31 May

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished in P3: "I think we were lacking all weekend compared to [McLaren] but I think we executed well and I think that third position is where we should be.

"I think it’s quite close behind as well so it’s fun and around here squeezing everything out the car, the grip is always quite good even with the hot temperatures but let’s see tomorrow what we can do from there."

On the car and how much work had to be put in overnight: "Not too much, I think we had quite a decent Friday and we just made some final changes to the car, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to really challenge for the pole."

On the race: "I will try my best, [McLaren] will be tough to beat but we will see what we can do tomorrow."

  4. 'Hopefully, it's an easy race for me' - Norrispublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 31 May

McLaren's Lando Norris speaking after he finished qualifying in P2: "Oscar [Piastri] drove very well. I think the pace is definitely there, just a couple of little mistakes like I said Oscar was driving very well all weekend. A good result for the team and an interesting start for tomorrow."

On three points separating him and his team-mate in the driver standings: "Hopefully, it's an easy race for me. It's a long run down into Turn one, which is normally interesting. We've got a lot of quick guys behind us, we won't count them out. It's a good result for today, I'm happy."

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will start in pole position: "I’m very happy, it’s been a good weekend so far. It didn’t start off in the best way, we were struggling a little bit but last night we found some pace and the car has been mega.

"I feel like I was able to put in some fast laps as well so thank you to the team for all the hard work.

"This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago so to have turned it around in the best way is a great result."

On finding pace: "I mean I improved quite a lot in Turn One actually and there were a couple of other places in the lap where I’ve been struggling a bit all day.

"I don’t know if I necessarily did better but it all just came to me mainly in the first half of the lap and the second half I could just hang on.

"It wasn’t the perfect lap but I think around here with the tyres going off so much through the lap it’s very tough to do that. I’m very happy with all the work we’ve put in."

On the race: "It’s going to be an interesting one tomorrow, I’m pretty glad that I’m starting from pole. Obviously it’s a long run to Turn One so I’ve got to make sure I get a good start tomorrow, but I’m very proud of the work we’ve done today and starting in the best spot."

The fight for pole certainly went down to the wire. Lando Norris, I think, certainly wanted that pole position. He said he's happy with that but his body language and smile tells me otherwise; the way he walked off from those pictures with Oscar Piastri. But the two McLarens looking strong.

Max Verstappen has won the last three Spanish GPs but is going to have a fight on to make it four tomorrow. The McLarens are looking in a different league.

  10. 'Piastri pulled it out the bag'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 31 May

Oscar Piastri has been very strong throughout this whole weekend. He's just pulled it out the bag there in qualifying, two-tenths up on his team-mate.

  11. Postpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 31 May

It is a McLaren one-two as Lando Norris is second fastest. It felt like he pushed a bit too much on that lap and made a couple of mistakes that possibly cost him pole position.

What an odd qualifying. You've got Charles Leclerc in fourth not even bothering to do another run, he's got out the car and seems quite happy with that.

Fernando Alonso in fifth and celebrating like he just won a race. An incredible job from him at his home race as well.
