George Russell has been very consistent this year, he's still P4 in the drivers' championship, so he's hanging in there.

Mercedes are looking fairly strong, I wouldn't rule them out.

Russell and Kimi Antonelli should both be in Q3 in qualifying and if one of the McLarens or the Red Bull has a bad lap, then they could be up there in the fight for the podium.

  2. Postpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 31 May

Lewis Hamilton, on mediums, goes second quickest, a tenth down on Charles Leclerc.

Very, very early days but some signs of encouragement for Ferrari after a Friday write off.

Almost everyone is out on the track now with 22 minutes on the clock as Charles Leclerc crosses the line with a time of 1:13.941 to go fastest. He's on softs.

  4. Postpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 31 May

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz are out on the track now as things start to get busier. Sainz has softs on and he goes top of the timesheet with a 1:14.124.

Oscar Piastri's time of 1:12.760 is the fastest of the weekend so far, so we're edging a little closer to that.

  5. Postpublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 31 May

Esteban Ocon has stuck on a set of softs and he goes quickest, but only for a short time as Yuki Tsunoda does 1:14.851s with mediums on his Red Bull.

  6. Postpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 31 May

A handful of drivers out now. Gabriel Bortoleto has the fastest of two times done so far with 1:15.224s on mediums. That's four tenths quicker than Franco Colapinto.

Red Bull definitely seem to be struggling more on that slow-speed than we've seen other teams.

Sector three begins in a very slow-speed way, so if they're struggling there, especially with the track that has this rear degradation, we could see them start to struggle a bit more in the race.

Approaching the quarter-of-an-hour mark and still the majority of drivers are in their respective garages. Lewis Hamilton is only just climbing into the Ferrari now.

It looks like Fernando Alonso has just done a little parade lap there, we saw him waving to the fans on a very slow lap as he made his way back into the pits.

Oscar Piastri is in no rush to get out. He's sat in the garage and having a bit of a laugh with McLaren colleagues.

A very casual start to Saturday.

Seems like a Lewis Hamilton super fan is in Spain today.

Not entirely sure having all of someone else's tattoos is something I'd admit to. How does he know he definitely has all of them?

It is looking like being another weekend of frustration for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton calling the car "not driveable".

He did say they had some downforce issues that he was hoping would be put right today, so let's see if work done since yesterday has paid off.

  18. Piastri expects 'tight battle' for pole in Spainpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 31 May

McLaren's Oscar Piastri says he expects a "tight battle" for pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix after setting the pace in Friday practice.

The world championship leader led Mercedes' George Russell by 0.286 seconds.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third and Lando Norris fourth. They set exactly the same lap time as each other - 0.024secs behind Russell - but four-time world champion Verstappen was classified third because he set his first.

"It's been a bit of an up and down day, ending on an up," said Australian Piastri, 24.

"Verstappen has been quick all day, Ferrari have been there, Mercedes popped up at the end. It is going to be a tight battle tomorrow, definitely some things to try and work on."

Verstappen said he had had an "OK Friday" and added a much-anticipated rule change introduced for this weekend to reduce front wing flexibility had affected the order "not a lot - but from my side that was also expected".

Briton Norris, winner in Monaco five days ago to move within three points of Piastri at the head of the championship standings, said: "Felt better in P1 than in P2, but trying things and will keep trying to improve for Saturday."

Hello and welcome to our coverage of qualifying day for the Spanish Grand Prix!

McLaren are once again looking the team to be beat as Lando Norris picked up from where he left off with his Monaco win by topping first practice, before Oscar Piastri took the honours in second practice.

We've one more session of practice coming up in just under 15 minutes before qualifying gets under way this afternoon.

McLaren seemed unaffected by a new front-wing technical directive as they dominated first and second practice on Saturday.

But the reigning world champion Max Verstappen was close enough to suggest that there could be a real battle for pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix later today.
