Charles Leclerc pulled off an extraordinary home win for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix, ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Ferrari chose a daring one-stop strategy for Leclerc, improvising mid-race, to vault him in front of the McLarens - who chose the conventional two-stop approach.

That left Leclerc hanging on in the closing laps from the rapidly closing McLarens and he just managed to hold on, winning by 2.6 seconds to send the tifosi in the grandstands wild.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen could finish only sixth, and Norris cut his championship lead by eight points to 62 with eight races to go, thanks to Norris grabbing the fastest lap before the chequered flag.

McLaren are now just eight points behind Red Bull in the constructors' championship.

The fans are not leaving the track any time soon. The Ferrari party is well and truly an all-nighter at Monza.

Charles Leclerc was downcast after qualifying in fourth on Saturday but now he has an Italian Grand Prix triumph to add to his home win in Monaco this season.

What will happen over at McLaren in the final eight races? Will Lando Norris' biggest competitor be his own team-mate Oscar Piastri?

Carlos Sainz finished in fourth in the second Ferrari. He told Sky Sports afterwards: “This has been a huge effort from the whole team bringing the upgrades but also to take risks with the strategy. At one point I thought everyone that stopped so early would have to stop again and then I was potentially the only one on a one-stop.

“The key of the race is that Charles pitting so early made it hard work until the end, even though we went through a tough phase with the tyres we both started degrading a lot when the others started to pit, but we took the risk.”

  8. 'When it's working like this it's perfect' - Vasseurpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 1 September

Ferraris team principal Fred Vasseur told Sky Sports: "It's been a good weekend, qualifying we were disappointed the pace was good but the race went very very well. From the beginning of the season we are better on the race pace than on qualifying.

"Everything went well today and when it's working like this it's perfect."

  9. 'I’m disappointed but Ferrari did a better job' - Norrispublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 1 September

McLarens Lando Norris finished in third, he said: “He did [catch me by surprise] because he [Piastri] got past. I don’t know what I should have done differently there, if I break one metre later we probably would have crashed so something we will look at. Ferrari drove a better race today especially Charles, he did a very good job so hats off to him.”

On the one-stop being a possibility, he added: “No, we considered it the whole race but it was not possible with the amount of graining that I had. It’s a tough one, we knew it would be tight but just with our car and the limitations we had it just wasn’t possible today. We knew that could be a possibility, I’m disappointed but Ferrari did a better job, they had a better car today.”

On the Drivers Championship and Piastri taking points away for him, he said: “Well done to him, he did a good job, he got past me, he deserves it.”

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who took the lead of the race on the opening lap but finished second: "It hursts. It hurts a lot. I did a lot of things right today. There was a lot of question marks on the strategy going into the race. From the position we were in, with the tyres looking like they did, doing a one-stop looked like a very risky call - and in the end it was right.

"Happy with the race and the pace I managed to achieve, just when you finish second, it hurts.

On whether he should have said yes to a one-stop: "In hindsight, yes. But everyone's a legend on Monday or after the race, but today we got it wrong, myself being a big part of that. We had everything to lose and Charles tried something a bit different, as he was going to finish third either way."

  11. 'The emotions in the last few laps exactly the same as in 2019' - Leclercpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 1 September

Charles Leclerc at Monza.Image source, Getty Images

Charles Leclerc wins his second race this season with Ferrari in Monza, he said: “It’s an incredible feeling, I thought the first time felt like this, and the second time wouldn’t feel as special, but the emotions in the last few laps were exactly the same as in 2019, just watching the Grandstand inside of the track which is tricky, just incredible.

“Monaco and Monza are the two races I want to win every year, obviously I want to win as many races as possible and the world championship as soon as possible, but these are the two most important races of the season and I managed to win them both so it’s so so special.”

On the upgrades and if Ferrari can keep challenging for wins, he added: “I don’t know because I think our package was working pretty well on a track like Monza, if it will be the same for the rest of the season, I still think the McLarens are the favourites, we have taken a step forward that is for sure. Baku is a nice track for me and I’ve been quite competitive in the past so who knows, maybe we can do something special there.”

The red smoke is so thick you couldn't actually see Charles Leclerc lift his winner's trophy, which looks a bit like a giant bottle opener this year.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri now soak Charles Leclerc with champagne. This is the Monegasque driver's second win on Italian soil and he's celebrating just as wildly as the first.
