  1. Will front wing test impact McLaren?published at 15:53 British Summer Time 30 May

Flexi wings have been around for donkey's years in Formula 1 and initaially it was a tool to redeuce drag on the straights while keeping the same cornering performance.

But they found under these current regulations they're a very effective tuning device, because these particular cars have a dedency to understeer in slow-speed corners and oversteer in high-speed corners, so you can play with the wing levels, with the wing flexing, to tune that stuff out.

This flexi test that's been introduced is basically because of Red Bull moaning about McLaren. They've basically been throwing as much rubbish at McLaren as they possibly can via the FIA and hoping some of this sticks.

There has been quite some significant hope from Red Bull, and Ferrari, that this test, in addition to the similar test that was introduced for rear wings at the start of the season, would negatively impact McLaren. But, Max Verstappen doesn't seem to have read the party line, because he doesn't think it'll make much difference. And McLaren have just dismissed it.

Going into this weekend's race there's been plenty of chat about the tightening of leeway for flexible bodywork being reduced from 15mm to 10mm on the front wing and its flap.

It is, of course, too early to say what kind of impact it has had after one practice session but one to keep an eye on in second practice.

McLaren's Lando Norris headed Red Bull's Max Verstappen in first practice at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Norris, winner in Monaco five days ago, was 0.367 seconds quicker than Verstappen as teams come to terms with new front wings forced upon them by a rule change for this race.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were third and fourth.

Norris, who trails team-mate Oscar Piastri by three points in the championship, was 0.576secs quicker than the Australian in this first session.

Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson was sixth fastest, ahead of the Haas of Briton Oliver Bearman, Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar, Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine's Pierre Gasly.

Mercedes' George Russell was 11th, ahead of the Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

  12. Second 'doesn't look too bad' for Verstappenpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 30 May

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent in Barcelona

It looks like any normal practice session at the moment, with the McLaren fastest and the Red Bull second. It's very early days and we can't really draw any conclusions at the moment.

One thing I would say is the trend of this season is Red Bull have quite often looked relatively uncompetitive on Fridays, only to make a step forward on Saturdays. Second doesn't look too bad for Max Verstappen on the face of it.

There's five minutes of the session remaining but Fernando Alonso's first practice is done as he comes in and gets out of the car.

He had been complaining about not having enough power down the straights.

I don't think they [Mercedes] are happy with the upgrades and haven't made as big of a jump as they would have hoped. They are working hard back in Brackley. I know their reserve driver, Frederik Vesti is in the simulator all weekend trying to get them back into the top 10 and hopefully the top five and a potential podium like last year.

There's a very brief wave of the yellow flags so someone perhaps had a little off as we enter the final few minutes of the session.

  16. Postpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 30 May

Lando Norris is looking set to finish fastest in this first practice session as he gets laps under his belt now, switching focus to long runs.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton has been sent back out on hards again.

  17. Postpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 30 May

Victor Martins is 19th on his Formula 1 debut, having got 19 laps under his belt so far. He ran with aero rakes on his Williams in the first half of the session so has been doing plenty of data gathering for his team.

  18. 'Tsunoda is getting there'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 30 May

    Olli Caldwell
Former F2, F3 and Alpine development driver on Sports Extra 3

Max [Verstappen] has dominated everyone who's been in that second car. Yuki Tsunoda has just gone from nine-tenths down from Verstappen to seven-tenths. He's getting there.

With the rise of McLaren, who are dominating the teams' championship, Red Bull say they don't care about it, but there's a lot of money involved and there are a lot of sponsors who I'm sure do care.
