Spots of rain on the TV camera and Oscar Piastri says the drizzle in the pit lane might be worse than before. Slick tyres are still bolted on, though...

  2. Cars head back outpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 5 July

The red flag has been cleared so we just wait now to see cars back on track. Franco Colapinto has left his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly all to do now, as the Frenchman is stuck at the bottom of the timesheets in 20th place with just over six minutes of the session left.

    Cars are coming out!

I'll be interested to hear if they say you should have pulled off the track somewhere and parked it, because you're interrupting the session or it may be an unsafe car but one thing I did like was the cheer from the crowd as [Franco Colapinto] came back on to the track, everyone loved that. But he's parked up, he's not made all the way back.

'Sorry, I lost the rear' - Colapintopublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 5 July

How long will Alpine keep Franco Colapinto for? He replaced Jack Doohan not long ago and there was supposed to be an evaluation before the British Grand Prix. Colapinto sounded upset as he explained he lost the rear during that spin.

  6. red flag

Cars head back to the garage as the marshals clear the gravel that's been left on the track by Franco Colapinto's incident. The Argentine took too much kerb through Vale and the car was spun around into the barriers. He's now stood next to his car and watching it get taken away.

The Alpine of Franco Colapinto kicks up a load of gravel at the end of the lap and he hits the barriers after twitching through Club, coming to stop just after. The Argentine managed to get going again but now he's halted trying to make his way back to the pits and we have a red flag.

Yuki Tsunoda is next to cross the line but the Japanese driver can only bank P14 on his first flying lap. Gear up to go again, Yuki.

Meanwhile, George Russell sounds a bit frantic on the team radio, asking his engineer for some advice.

Yellow flag! Franco Colapinto has spun.

I think that announcement that there is drizzle has encouraged people to get out there on the track. You could be in the garage, and everyone is getting their time and you didn't get a time in the dry track and then it rains, you are out in Q1.

The Ferraris aren't troubling the top spots just yet. Lewis Hamilton is down to sixth and Charles Leclerc is seventh. Oscar Piastri is setting the pace now, jumping above Max Verstappen by just 0.039 seconds. Fernando Alonso is third in the Aston Martin. Interesting.

  11. Verstappen goes quickestpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 5 July

Max Verstappen is out in the Red Bull and clocking a purple sector in the opening part of the lap. The Dutchman follows that up with another fastest section and he shoots to the top of the timesheets with a 1:26.041. Lando Norris slots into second, about a tenth off the four-time world champion's marker.

We've got five cars that could get on the front row here. The McLarens, we expect them, after their performances this year, to be the quickest. We didn't get a chance to see their full speed in FP3. it was very tight at the top.

The first cars to come out are on the soft compound, so that rain isn't too much of a threat just yet - the green intermediates can stay on the shelf for now. Nico Hulkenberg reaches Turn 17 and his Sauber decides to twitch. The German has posted a time of 1:27.477 to start with, but Alex Albon in the Williams is quickest so far with a 1:26.393.

  14. 'Biggest attended event'published at 15:03 British Summer Time 5 July

    Damon Hill

It's changed a lot, over the years this circuit. It's developed, it's evolved and it has become absolutely stupendous. This grand prix is the biggest attended event and the grandstands have grown everywhere. We saw a few jackets going on, there's light spitting. It needs a lot of water on the track to make a significant effect.

And bang on cue, Sauber send out Gabriel Bortoleto and team-mate Nico Hulkenberg as soon as the green light comes on. The two drivers are joined by Pierre Gasly, who tells Alpine there is some rain knocking around.

It's a blustery day at Silverstone, there have been spots of rain, nothing too much at the moment but the clouds are very ominous, very threatening and that can really mix things up here in qualifying. Lots of support for the main men here.

  17. Go! Go! Go!published at 15:00 British Summer Time 5 July

Well done the team at Sauber. Gabriel Bortoleto is ready to participate in British Grand Prix qualifying. Excellent effort to get the Brazilian up and running again after that third practice incident.

    Q1 is green.

  20. Who needs a good qualifying?published at 14:57 British Summer Time 5 July

    Carlos SainzImage source, Getty Images

Williams will be hoping for a comeback on home soil at Silverstone following Austria's disastrous double DNF for Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon on race day.

Saturday's qualifying didn't bring much joy either, with Spaniard Sainz suffering his third consecutive Q1 elimination, leading to lots of questions about the car's performance after the session.

At Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda was also an early fence faller last week, failing to make it through to the second part of qualifying and ultimately lining up 18th on the grid.
