    Lewis Hamilton left it right to the last lap to do it and I believe that was on a new set of soft tyres just to get up to P9, it shows he's struggling a little bit for that pace.

    It was the Red Bull of Max Verstappen who topped the opening session of qualifying. The Dutchman headed Lando Norris by 0.027 seconds followed by the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

    Kimi Antonelli's good lap put him fourth on the timesheets and a positive start for Yuki Tsunoda returns a P5 for his run out.

    Fernando Alonso allows the Alpine of Jack Doohan to sneak through so he could pick up a crafty tow off the Australian. As Doohan crosses the line, he can only lift himself to P15. As more cars complete their laps, Doohan drops back into the elimination pit.

    Lewis Hamilton has lifted his Ferrari up to 10th place with five minutes to go of Q1 in Saudi Arabia. His team-mate Charles Leclerc is doing slightly better in seventh, but the Scuderia are not up in the high times just yet.

    I think everybody from George Russell down will have to run again and try and improve because I see the track just ramping up.

    Fernando Alonso lifts his car to sixth on the timesheets above the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. Lewis Hamilton is still lying in the danger zone, the Ferrari man needing an injection of pace to avoid a Q1 exit.

    Isack Hadjar is the latest driver to radio a "I brushed the wall" message. No major damage done, however.

    There's a plastic bag on track causing a few nervous glances, but it seems to have blown to a safe place. Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are the top three, followed by George Russell in fourth and the Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda in fifth.

    I'm expecting a titanic battle for pole between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the McLarens.

    At the end of yesterday I was tipping Norris, I'm not so sure any more, it's so close between them.

    Lando Norris was fastest in third practice and he's top dog again in Q1. The McLaren is more than half a second clear of Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari. Alex Albon's time is still good enough for third.

    Williams have released Alex Albon on a flyer and the Thai-Brit driver goes to the top of the timesheets with a 1:28.866, ahead of the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.
